Gonçalves de Magalhães was a 19th-century Brazilian Romantic playwright deeply affected by social discrimination against marginal groups, including women, actors, poets, and Jews. In 1838 he wrote a tragedy about the life of the Brazilian playwright Antonio José da Silva, burnt at the stake by the Inquisition in Portugal in 1734 for Judaizing. Includes a facsimile of the full text of the play (122 pp.). Analyzes the life of da Silva who identified himself as a Christian and the version given in Magalhães's play where the main character appears as a Jew prepared for martyrdom.
