Il volume nasce dalla convinzione che i principi di restauro odierni non corrispondono più a quelli proposti nei testi canonici, giudicati oscuri e incongruenti, che l'Autore vuole sottoporre a critica per costruire una nuova struttura teorica. Questa necessità deriva da ragioni come il boom della conservazione dell'arte contemporanea, l'ascesa inarrestabile del digitale, l'ascesa della categoria Heritage, aperta all 'intangibile, e l'esplosione del Postmodernismo. La Teoria contemporanea mira a sostituire i precedenti miti delle teorie classiche (verità, storia, conoscenza, scienza ...) con altri, più adatti ai problemi che il restauro cerca oggi di risolvere: democrazia, sostenibilità, soddisfazione, intersoggettività . Lo spartiacque concettuale è rappresentato dalla Carta Burra e dal conseguente rifiuto dei principi di restauro riconosciuti, a partire da quello della reversibilità. La visione proposta è fortemente relativista e soggettivista, quindi gli oggetti di restauro non sono considerati tali per il loro valore culturale intrinseco, ma come simboli socialmente riconosciuti, o prova di discipline etno-storiche. Poco o nulla, infatti, parliamo nel volume della storia e della memoria. L'autore rifiuta, in particolare, la teoria di Cesare Brandi e il suo linguaggio non familiare. Non vuole entrare nella sua logica, che si sente lontano dalla loro sensibilità e preparazione, più aderente ad una visione empirica anglosassone. Tuttavia, egli non rinuncia alla parola teoria così tanto che si potrebbe ben dire che la sua è una teoria empirica, cioè, in sostanza, una non-teoria. Ma forse oggi non è il momento di fondare una nuova teoria, ma piuttosto, sulla scia di una lunga e autorevole tradizione, sviluppare ed espandere precedenti acquisizioni, con atti di raffinatezza e integrazione concettuale.
