Love Songs from al-Andalus presents an updated survey of the debates concerning Andalusian strophic poetry and their Kharjas. Attention is focused on the texts themselves and their literary implications as testimonies of the multicultural and multilingual society of al-Andalus. Since languages and alphabets of the three major religions have been used, these texts are studies historically, prosodically, thematically and stylistically and are related to the three literary traditions. One of the novelties of this study is the fact that it has been based upon the most updated edition and interpretations of the texts introducing emendations in over a third of its contents and making obsolete most of the hundreds of previous articles and books on the topic. Another novelty is the fact that stylistic features have been studied according to the Arabic model, casting new light on them. The survey of thematic relationships and the analysis of code-switching phenomena add weight to the conclusions of this research.

En ese momento la tierra ocupada se llamaba Al-Andalus. El idioma español ha cambiado durante un período de más de 700 años. Aunque el idioma árabe es muy diferente al español, el idioma árabe tuvo una influencia sobre el español. Aunque la influencia no es muy fuerte, todavía se pueden ver evidentes influencias árabes en la actualidad. En el siguiente trabajo explicaré qué influencias están involucradas y cómo surgieron. En primer lugar, me referiré brevemente a los acontecimientos históricos de la Reconquista y Al-Andalus para sentar las bases de mis análisis posteriores. La ocupación de España por los árabes ha moldeado y cambiado el país cultural y económicamente. Estos cambios en la cultura todavía se reflejan en el idioma de hoy. También explicaré la situación lingüística en Al-Andalus. Tan pronto como una población se encuentra con una población que habla otro idioma, es inevitable que los idiomas respectivos cambien. Sobre todo, el idioma de la población subyugada está cambiando drásticamente. Con el paso del tiempo, se desarrollaron diferentes dialectos u otras lenguas, cuya influencia aún se puede encontrar en el español de hoy. Para comprender con precisión la influencia real de la lengua árabe en el español, explicaré las propiedades en las áreas de fonología, morfología y léxicos. Sobre todo, el área de los léxicos juega un papel importante en mi tema. Por último, pero no menos importante, resumiré los conocimientos adquiridos para abordar la pregunta "¿Qué influencia tiene la era de Al-Andalus en la lengua española?".

La huella de Al-Ándalus es mucho más profunda y extensa de lo que pudiera parecer con un análisis superficial del tema. La huella más visible es la del patrimonio en forma de palacios, mezquitas convertidas en iglesias, alcazabas, torres, murallas, etc. Para la existencia de este tipo de huella no es necesario que haya habido una continuidad poblacional, como tampoco es necesaria esa pervivencia para otro de los legados, el científico, que como conocimiento pasa a formar parte del patrimonio de otras culturas. Pero hay otro tipo de huellas que han pervivido hasta ahora que sí que necesitan para su transmisión a lo largo del tiempo de una pervivencia poblacional, muy difícil pervivencia en muchos casos, sin la cual no se entendería ese legado. Una parte de esa población se adaptó rápido, religiosa y socialmente, a la nueva sociedad conquistadora del siglo XIII, de la que por cierto, no divergía tanto como pudiera pensarse. Otra parte de la población andalusí, la que decidió seguir conservando su religión musulmana o judía dentro del territorio ya conquistado, tuvo una adaptación mucho más traumática a raíz de la intransigencia de poderosos sectores de la iglesia católica. De una forma u otra, una parte importante de la población andalusí siguió habitando el territorio peninsular y, con mayor o menor grado de asimilación a la sociedad cristiana, intervino en la conformación de esa nueva sociedad. Así pues, debemos tener en cuenta esta premisa para poder entender la gran importancia del legado de al-Ándalus, no sólo en relación al patrimonio sino también a la idiosincrasia del pueblo andaluz que tiene mucho que ver con la del pueblo andalusí. El amor por la poesía, la música, la fiesta; su interrelación con la naturaleza; la conformación del paisaje agrario; la arquitectura popular; la forma de comer, de rezar, de ver la muerte y la vida, de hablar, de nombrar a los lugares y a sí mismos; en definitiva, la cultura, pues todo ello junto es lo que antropológicamente se conoce como cultura, no se entendería actualmente sin la existencia de la cultura andalusí, de la que es heredera, y que a su vez es heredera, en gran parte, de la cultura grecorromana anterior.
