Desde sus orígenes fundacionales, a finales del siglo XIX, hasta su realidad en el presente, a comienzos del XXI, una parte decisiva y con frecuencia harto reveladora del cine español ha mantenido siempre nutritivas raíces hundidas en la producción literaria que alimenta numerosas parcelas y ámbitos sustanciales de su creatividad fílmica. La tarea de rastrear y localizar esas raíces, sacarlas a la luz, expurgar la maleza que con frecuencia las ha recubierto -e incluso adulterado- durante años y años, documentarlas adecuadamente y proponer una catalogación de éstas es el empeño de la presente publicación, concebida para levantar acta de la Biblioteca de referencia que se oculta, o que mantiene sus cimientos, bajo centenares y centenares de películas. A diferencia de otros trabajos que la preceden con parecidos o equivalentes objetivos, esta Biblioteca del cine español no es una radiografía de las relaciones entre el cine español y la literatura española, sino de los vínculos creativos que mantiene el cine español con todas las formas literarias (directas o paralelas) que alimentan nuestro cine, provengan éstas de donde provengan, pertenezcan a un género o a otro, cualquiera que sea el idioma en el que se expresen o el país en el que tengan origen; es decir, las obras literarias españolas y extranjeras, las estrictamente narrativas (la gran novela y el relato corto) y las teatrales (del gran drama escénico a la revista musical, de la ópera a la zarzuela), las poéticas, las anónimas y las orales, las radiofónicas y las del cómic, las que nacen de una canción y las que proceden de un romance popular. Se teje así una tupida y densa red de relaciones intertextuales entre la ficción cinematográfica española y el conjunto de sus bases literarias, a cuyo fructífero entramado intentan arrojar luz estas páginas.
