Este livro se propõe a dar visibilidade à presença feminina no contexto dos deslocamentos portugueses para o Brasil, abordando aspectos diferenciados de suas experiências, ações cotidianas, de trabalho, manifestações culturais, práticas e memórias. Quase sempre silenciadas, as mulheres não podem ser consideradas como passivas nos processos de deslocamentos. Ao contrário, mesmo quando estavam destinadas a permanecer na terra natal, participavam ativamente do processo e das decisões de partida. Assim, tanto as que ficaram como as que saíram tiveram suas histórias de vida transformadas, com a assunção de funções e responsabilidades ampliadas. Ciente de que as fontes priorizadas pela historiografia envolvem discursos universais que silenciam as mulheres, a obra abarcou o desafio de uma ampla pesquisa documental, através da qual resgatou as múltiplas experiências das mulheres e/imigrantes portuguesas e sua presença no Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo. Torna-se, assim, uma contribuição singular para dissipar a névoa que encobre trajetórias de mulheres, revelando toda a sua capacidade de reinvenção e permitindo afirmar que a presença feminina foi fundamental para o sucesso da empreitada de e/imigração.

Der portugiesische Diktator Salazar nahm Zehntausende auf, die nach Westen flüchteten – ließ dann aber seine Geheimpolizei auf diejenigen los, die nicht rasch genug weiterzogen. Marion Kaplan beschreibt die dramatischen Erfahrungen jüdischer Flüchtlinge, die in Portugal ausharrten, bis sie sichere Häfen in Übersee erreichen konnten. Die Autorin untersucht nicht nur die sozialen und physischen Umwälzungen, die diese Flüchtlinge erlebten, sondern versucht auch ihre Gefühle nachzuzeichnen. So schreibt sie eine emotionale Geschichte der Flucht. Die Autorin untersucht, wie sich bestimmte Orte und Situationen auf das Innenleben der Flüchtlinge auswirkten, darunter etwa die riskante Grenzüberquerung oder die hoffnungsvolle Fahrt auf überfüllten transatlantischen Schiffen.
