Por eso transgredió cánones religiosos y sociales y su temple y su carácter no le permitieron ninguna rectificación. Dominó y esclavizó a quienes la rodeaban valiéndose de su belleza y de su femenil coquetería. "Odió a sus enemigos y quiso a sus amigos". En Manuelita resplandecieron mil virtudes que la coronaron con títulos inmarcesibles: "La amada in mortal". "La Libertadora del Libertador". Manuelita siempre respetuosa y digna no vivió en la misma casa con el Libertador en ninguno de los países donde estuvieron, ni tampoco en las marchas de campaña. Sólo compartió la vivienda en la Quinta de Bogotá después del atentado septembrino, a petición expresa del Libertador, para cuidarlo y reanimarlo. Para Simón Bolívar, Manuelita fue al mismo tiempo amiga, amante, mujer, secretaria, escribiente, húsar, espía, enfermera, consejera, compañera, oficial de confianza, archivera, depositaría de documentos íntimos, defensora, inspiradora, promotora y confidente. O como bellamente lo escribiera la académica y poetisa Dora Castellanos, en su hermoso libro "Un hombre diáfano, Simón Bolívar" "Ella fue, en materia de amor - pasión, la mujer más importante y significativa de su vida. Es a la única a quien llama, evoca e invoca no sólo siempre, sino cuando comienza a declinar su sol vital. Es a ella a quien clama con desesperación: "Ven, ven pronto" y ella es la que acude una y mil veces: aconseja, archiva, guarda y aguarda, espera y desespera, acompaña, entibia, cura, pone y dispone, lo exalta, lo encoleriza, lo apacigua y finalmente lo salva de ser asesinado". Sugestiva y cautivante la vida de Manuelita Sáenz, "la primera feminista de América". Las repúblicas bolivarianas están en deuda con esta mujer, la pionera en participar en la vida pública de estos países hispanoamericanos cuando no existían los derechos femeninos.
