While the economic involvement of early modern Germany in slavery and the slave trade is increasingly receiving attention, the direct participation of Germans in human trafficking remains a blind spot in historiography. This edited volume focuses on practices of enslavement taking place within German territories in the early modern period as well as on the people of African, Asian, and Native American descent caught up in them.

Depicting a young woman's life in Nazi Germany, a masterpiece from the author of Child of All Nations 'I cannot think of anything else that conjures up so powerfully the atmosphere of a nation turned insane' Sunday Telegraph Nineteen-year-old Sanna just wants to drink her beer in peace, but that's difficult when Hitler has come to town and his motorcade is blocking the streets of Frankfurt. What's more, her best friend Gerti is in love with a Jewish boy, her brother writes books that have been blacklisted and her own aunt may denounce her to the authorities at any moment, as Germany teeters on the edge of the abyss. Written after she had fled the Nazi regime, Irmgard Keun's masterly novel captures the feverish hysteria and horror of the era with devastating perceptiveness and humour. The remarkable and shocking true account of the kidnap of Natascha Kampusch in 1998, who shares her deeply moving story. On 2 March 1998 ten-year-old Natascha Kampusch was snatched off the street by a stranger and bundled into a white van. When she emerged from her prison eight years later, her childhood had gone. In 3,096 Days Natascha tells her incredible story for the first time: her difficult childhood, the day of her abduction, her imprisonment in a five-square-metre dungeon, and the mental and physical abuse she suffered from her abductor, Wolfgang Priklopil. A story about the triumph of the human spirit, 3,096 Days describes how, in a situation of almost unbearable hopelessness, she learned how to manipulate her captor and, against inconceivable odds, she managed to escape unbroken. 'A brilliantly insightful dissection of her years in captivity' Jon Ronson, Guardian 'An excellent book' Kathryn Hughes, Mail on Sunday 'Remarkable - not just for Kampusch's account of her ordeal but as a testament to her indomitable spirit' Daisy Goodwin, Sunday Times

Handbook Of Alien Species In Europe written by Delivering Alien Invasive Species and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11-14 with Science categories.

Biological invasions by alien (non-native) species are widely recognized as a significant component of human-caused global environmental change and the second most important cause of biodiversity decline. Alien species threaten many European ecosystems and have serious environmental, economic and health impacts. The DAISIE (Delivering Alien Invasive Species Inventories for Europe) project has now brought together all available information on alien species in Europe (terrestrial, aquatic and marine) and from all taxa (fungi, plants, animals). Thus for the first time, an overview and assessment of biological invasions in the Pan-European region is finally possible. The Handbook of Alien Species in Europe summarises the major findings of this groundbreaking research and addresses the invasion trends, pathways, and both economic as well as ecological impact for eight major taxonomic groups. Approximately 11.000 alien species recorded in Europe are listed, and fact sheets for 100 of the most invasive alien species are included, each with a distribution map and colour illustration. The book is complemented by a regularly updated internet database providing free additional information. With its highly interdisciplinary approach, DAISIE and its Handbook will be the basis for future scientific investigations as well as management and control of alien invasive species in Europe.

The Village And The World written by Maria Mies and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In retrospect, my life appears to me like a meandering river which started out as a small stream in the mountains of the volcanic Eifel. The stream eventually collected more waters, grew broader and broader, and branched out into a huge network that now encompasses the whole world. In this autobiography Maria Mies packs in seventy-seven years of life: from the small German village of her childhood, to the world of the Indian subcontinent. Sociologist and womens studies researcher, scholar, ecofeminist, and international activist against violence against women and exploitation through globalisation, Maria Mies is one of the worlds original thinkers. Her achievements include developing groundbreaking praxis and theory around the concept of "housewifisation", the violence of colonisation and profound writings about ecofeminism. She fights the Multilateral Agreement of Investment, she fights the General Agreement on Trade in Services, she fights against the patenting of life and tackles reproductive and genetic engineering as well as food security, but she never gives up hope that there is an alternative to present day injustice and exploitation; that "the good life" is possible. And Maria never forgets her origins: Despite all my travels around the world, I have never forgotten where I came from: from a peasant family in a small village. This not only helped me keep my feet on the ground, but also protected me from excessive romanticism and quixotic idealism. I know that the food doesnt come from the supermarket but from the soil.
