Excerpt from Osterreichische Monatsschrift fur den Orient, 1891, Vol. 17 Die im J. 1871 bereits zum grossten Theile vollendete Fahrstrasse, welche heute an Stelle des alten, vielfach gefahrlichen Karawanenweges die pontische Hafenstadt Trapezunt mit dem armeni schen Hochlande und dem iiauptemporium des selben, der Stadt Erzerum, verbindet, fuhrt bis zu dem in einer Seitenschlucht des charschut-thales gelegenen Bergstadtchen Gumischhane meist durch wasserreiche Gegenden mit uppiger Vegetation. Zahlreiche von Turken und griechischen Christen bewohnte Dorfer beleben die Landschaft, wahrend man armenischen Familien unter der bauerlichen Bevolkerung hier noch selten begegnet. Gumisch hane selbst, einst ein bluhender Ort, als seine schon den Romern bekannten Silberminen im Be triebe waren, hat zwar, seit durch Eindringen von Wasser in die ergiebigsten Gruben der Betrieb in's Stocken gerieth, viel von seiner fruheren Wohlhabenheit eingebiisst, doch den Bewohnern der umliegenden Ortschaften liefern heute'acker bau und Viehzucht ein reichliches Ertragniss und die Fruchte der ausgedehnten Obstgarten der Stadt sind beruhmt ob ihrer Grosse und Schmack haftigkeit. Weiter gegen Suden windet sich die Strasse durch eine enge Schlucht zu den Hohen des warwik-berges hiuan, welcher die Grenze zwischen dem Vilajet von Trapezunt und jenem von Erzerum und zugleich die Wasserscheide bildet zwischen den Quellgebieten des Charschut und des tchorok-flusses, von welchen der eine westlich bei Tireboli, der andere ostlich bei Batum sich in das Schwarze Meer ergiesst. Hier verandert sich der Charakter der Gegend, der Baumwuchs wird sparlicher, weite Flachen von \veidegrund werden nur sporadisch von Oasen fruchtbaren Ackerbodens unterbrochen. Umsonst spaht das Auge nach menschlichen Wohnungen, nur wo Terrainsenkungen einen passenden Ver steck bieten, entdeckt man hie und da niedrige Hutten, deren ache, grasuberwachsene Dacher und schmutzige Lehmmauern sich nur wenig von der Erdwand abheben, welche diesen armseligen Niederlassungen im Rucken als schutzender Wall dient. Wir befinden uns hier auf der Vorstufe der eigentlichen Ilochgebirgskette des nordlichen taunus-zuges. Vor uns am sudlichen Horizonte erhebt sich der kop-dag als der hochste Gipfel der Kette und dieser muss noch uberstiegen werden. Combining history of science and a history of universities with the new imperial history, Universities in Imperial Austria 1848–1918: A Social History of a Multilingual Space by Jan Surman analyzes the practice of scholarly migration and its lasting influence on the intellectual output in the Austrian part of the Habsburg Empire. The Habsburg Empire and its successor states were home to developments that shaped Central Europe's scholarship well into the twentieth century. Universities became centers of both state- and nation-building, as well as of confessional resistance, placing scholars if not in conflict, then certainly at odds with the neutral international orientation of academe. By going beyond national narratives, Surman reveals the Empire as a state with institutions divided by language but united by legislation, practices, and other influences. Such an approach allows readers a better view to how scholars turned gradually away from state-centric discourse to form distinct language communities after 1867; these influences affected scholarship, and by examining the scholarly record, Surman tracks the turn. Drawing on archives in Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Ukraine, Surman analyzes the careers of several thousand scholars from the faculties of philosophy and medicine of a number of Habsburg universities, thus covering various moments in the history of the Empire for the widest view. Universities in Imperial Austria 1848–1918 focuses on the tension between the political and linguistic spaces scholars occupied and shows that this tension did not lead to a gradual dissolution of the monarchy’s academia, but rather to an ongoing development of new strategies to cope with the cultural and linguistic multitude.

The book is a comprehensive introduction to the work of the Estonian-German biologist Jakob von Uexküll. After a first introductory chapter by Morten Tønnessen and a second chapter on Uexküll's life and philosophical background, it contains four chapters devoted to the analysis of his main works. They are followed by a vast eighth chapter which deals with the influence Uexküll had on other philosophers and scientists. Finally, the author discloses his conclusions, focused on the possibility of updating Uexküll’s work. As far as the key issue is concerned, the Uexküllian Umwelt is the perceptive and operative world which surrounds animal species; it is a subjective species-specific construction which provides living organisms with great security and behaviour stability. The relationship that the animal carries out with its environment is a complex system of semiotic interactions: its behaviour is not a set of mechanical reactions, but a spontaneous attribution of meaning to the outside world.
