Die Moderne erliegt seit dem ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert in immer stärkerem Maße der Faszinationskraft des Spiels, die sich nicht zuletzt in der modischen, aber indifferenten Formel ausdrückt: "Alles ist Spiel." Die Spielkategorie dient dabei als Grundlage für die Selbstbeschreibungen moderner Gesellschaften. Ihr wird nichts Geringeres zugemutet, als eine sich ausdifferenzierende und unübersichtliche Lebenswelt in ihrer Gesamtheit zu beschreiben und noch einmal in den Griff zu bekommen. Diese Hoffnung auf gelingende Selbst- und Weltbemächtigung angesichts moderner Entfremdungserfahrungen findet sich bereits am Anfang der ästhetischen Begründung des Spielbegriffs um 1800. Dieser gewinnt seine herausragende Bedeutung gerade in Verbindung mit Identitätsstiftungsproblemen in der Moderne. Im und mit dem Spiel soll eine punktuelle Freiheitserfahrung und gelingende Ich-Konstitution erreicht werden, die Voraussetzung für ein geglücktes Weltverhältnis ist. Diese Utopie des Spiels, die ein unentfremdetes Leben verspricht, ist unlösbar mit seiner begrifflichen Erfolgs-geschichte verbunden. Die stets wiederkehrende Aktualisierung des emanzipatorischen Po-tentials macht aus dem Spielbegriff eine wichtige ideengeschichtliche Klammer, die wesentliche Konzeptionen des späten 18. Jahrhunderts noch mit Theorien der Postmoderne verbindet.

In this book Christoph Menke attempts to explain art's sovereign power to subvert reason without falling into an error common to Adorno's negative dialectics and Derrida's deconstruction. Recent discussions of aesthetics, whether in the hermeneutic or the analytic tradition, understand the place of art and aesthetic experience according to a model of autonomy--as just one among the many modes of experience that make up the realm of reason, situated beside the other spheres of value. In contrast, Theodor Adorno and Jacques Derrida view art and aesthetic experience as a medium for the dissolution of nonaesthetic reason, an experientially enacted critique of reason. Art is not only autonomous, following its own law, different from nonaesthetic reason, but sovereign: it subverts the rule of reason.In this book Christoph Menke attempts to explain art's sovereign power to subvert reason without falling into an error common to Adorno's negative dialectics and Derrida's deconstruction. The error, which already appeared in romanticism, is to conceive of the sovereignty of art as reflecting the superiority of its knowledge. For art entails no knowledge and its negativity toward reason cannot be articulated as an insight into the nature of reason: art is sovereign not despite, but because of, its autonomy. Menke brings to his arguments a firm grounding in both philosophy and literary studies, as well as familiarity with German, French, and American sources.

Originally published in in 2004. What, at this historical moment "after Auschwitz," still remains of the questions traditionally asked by theology? What now is theology's minimal degree? This magisterial study, the first extended comparison of the writings of Theodor W. Adorno and Emmanuel Levinas, explores remnants and echoes of religious forms in these thinkers' critiques of secular reason, finding in the work of both a "theology in pianissimo" constituted by the trace of a transcendent other. The author analyzes, systematizes, and formalizes this idea of an other of reason. In addition, he frames these thinkers' innovative projects within the arguments of such intellectual heirs as Jürgen Habermas and Jacques Derrida, defending their work against later accusations of "performative contradiction" (by Habermas) or "empiricism" (by Derrida) and in the process casting important new light on those later writers as well. Attentive to rhetorical and rational features of Adorno's and Levinas's texts, his investigations of the concepts of history, subjectivity, and language in their writings provide a radical interpretation of their paradoxical modes of thought and reveal remarkable and hitherto unsuspected parallels between their philosophical methods, parallels that amount to a plausible way of overcoming certain impasses in contemporary philosophical thinking. In Adorno, this takes the form of a dialectical critique of dialectics; in Levinas, that of a phenomenological critique of phenomenology, each of which sheds new light on ancient and modern questions of metaphysics, ethics, and aesthetics. ger: Moralerziehung zählt gesellschaftlich wie fachlich zu den fundamentalen Problemen der Pädagogik. Für die Grundfrage: (Wie) ist Moralerziehung möglich? spielt die Ästhetik eine Schlüsselrolle. Diese Einsicht gegenwärtig kaum berücksichtigt. Sie wird auf Basis zentraler historischer Veröffentlichungen aus der ersten Blütezeit der wissenschaftlichen Ästhetik und Pädagogik untersucht. Anhand dieser Quellen wird der pädagogische Diskurs über Ästhetik und Moral hermeneutisch und vergleichend analysiert und zum gegenwärtigen Diskurs in Bezug gesetzt. HERBART hält die Ästhetik für pädagogisch zentral, da sie Moralerziehung als Vermittlung von Urteilsfähigkeit ermögliche. ?Ästhetische Darstellungen der Welt? seien ?das Hauptgeschäft der Erziehung?. KANT schließt das Gefühl als Basis moralischer Urteile aus. Ästhetische Urteile aber äußerten sich im Gefühl der Lust/Unlust und seien dennoch frei. Aufgrund der symbolisierenden Kraft des Ästhetischen habe das ?lebendige Beispiel? moralisierende Wirkung. Auch SCHILLER betont v. a. die Freiheit ästhetischer Urteile und die Verbindung der Ideen von Schönheit und Menschheit. Schließlich wird die Aesthetica von BAUMGARTEN untersucht. Das gegenwärtig weitgehend unbekannte Werk beeinflusste als erste systematische Veröffentlichung über Ästhetik als Wissenschaft die Positionen von Herbart, Kant und Schiller nachweislich und enthält aufschlussreiche pädagogische Implikationen. Resümierend muss man festhalten: Ästhetik erlaubt die Integration verschiedener gegensätzlicher Momente: Gefühl?Vernunft, Fürsorge?Gerechtigkeit, Situation?Prinzip, subjektives Glück?universelle Moral. Diese integrierende Kraft macht sie bei gleichzeitiger Wahrung der Eigenständigkeit von Ethik, Ästhetik und Pädagogik für die Erziehung nützlich: es wird pädagogisch möglich, Freiheit zu kultivieren, Urteilsfähigkeit herauszufordern und die Handlungswirksamkeit von Einsichten zu stärken. D.h. Moralerziehung wird ermöglicht.
