The Caribbean has played a crucial geopolitical role in the Western pursuit of economic dominance, yet Eurocentric research usually treats the Caribbean as a peripheral region, consequently labelling the inhabitants as beings without agency. Examining asymmetrical relations of power in the Greater Caribbean in historical and contemporary perspectives, this volume explores the region’s history of resistance and subversion of oppressive structures against the backdrop of the Caribbean’s central role for the accumulation of wealth of European and North American actors and the respective dialectics of modernity/coloniality, through a variety of experiences inducing migration, transnational exchange and transculturation. Contributors approach the Caribbean as an empowered space of opposition and agency and focus on perspectives of the region as a place of entanglements with a long history of political and cultural practices of resistance to colonization, inequality, heteronomy, purity, invisibilization, and exploitation. An important contribution to the literature on agency and resistance in the Caribbean, this volume offers a new perspective on the region as a geopolitically, economically and culturally crucial space, and it will interest researchers in the fields of Caribbean politics, literature and heritage, colonialism, entangled histories, global studies perspectives, ethnicity, gender, and migration.

The circulation and entanglements of human beings, data, and goods have not necessarily and by themselves generated a universalising consciousness. The "global" and the "universal", in other words, are not the same. The idea of a world-society remains highly contested. Our times are marked by the fragmentation of a double relativistic character: the inevitable critique of Western universalism on the one hand, and resurgent identitarian and neo-nationalistic claims to identity on the other. Sources of an argumentation for a strong universalism brought forward by Western traditions such as Christianity, Marxism, and Liberalism have largely lost their legitimation. All the while, manifold and situated narratives of a common world that re-address the universal are under way of being produced and gain significance. This volume tracks the development and relevance of such cultural and social practices that posit forms of what we call minor universality. It asks: Where and how do contemporary practices open up concrete settings so as to create experiences, reflections and agencies of a shared humanity? Examining a range of contemporary Anglophone texts, this book opens up postcolonial and transcultural studies for discussions of visuality and vision. It argues that the preoccupation with visual practices in Anglophone literatures addresses the power of images, vision and visual aesthetics to regulate cultural visibility and modes of identification in an unevenly structured world. The representation of visual practices in the imaginative realm of fiction opens up a zone in which established orders of the sayable and visible may be revised and transformed. In 12 chapters, the book examines narrative fiction by writers such as Michael Ondaatje, Derek Walcott, Salman Rushdie, David Dabydeen and NoViolet Bulawayo, who employ word-image relations to explore the historically fraught links between visual practices and the experience of modernity in a transcultural context. Against this conceptual background, the examination of verbal-visual relations will illustrate how Anglophone fiction models alternative modes of re-presentation that reflect critically on hegemonic visual regimes and reach out for new, more pluralized forms of exchange.

The global field of contemporary art is shaped by inter-racial conflicts. Alleviative Objects approaches Caribbean art through intersectional entanglements and combines decolonial epistemologies with critical whiteness studies and affect theory in order to rethink `Euro- and U.S.-centric' perspectives on art, race, and class. David Frohnapfel shows how progressive racism in the discourse on Haitian art recenters Whiteness by performing benign, innocent, and heroic identifications with the artist group Atis Rezistans. While the study turns critically towards Whiteness, it also turns away from it and towards the compelling contributions of Haitian curators and artists to the decentralization of contemporary art.

Untersucht wird eine transmediale Vergangenheitsdarstellung, die marginalisierte Erfahrungen erinnerbar macht. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die avantgardistischen Modelle der karibisch-diasporischen Geschichtsschreibung die dominante Historiographie des europäischen Kolonialismus ersetzen und neues Weltwissen erschließen.

Posthum vor allem wegen seines Romans 2666 von der globalen Literaturkritik zum ersten Klassiker der Weltliteratur des 21. Jahrhunderts stilisiert, fungieren in Bolaños Texten intertextuelle Verweise als ein zentrales Formverfahren, das bislang von der Kritik kaum eingehender untersucht worden ist. Die Werk-Studie situiert Bolaño dabei nicht nur dezidiert innerhalb einer lateinamerikanischen Genealogie eines «wilden Lesens», sondern legt über eine Lektüre, die zugleich philologisch-detailliert und panoramatisch-ideengeschichtlich operiert, die Auseinandersetzungen von Bolaños Texten über die gescheiterten Revolutionen in Lateinamerika oder die Verheerungen des globalen Kapitalismus mit dem literarischen Kanon der (Post-)Moderne frei. Diese umfassen neben der lateinamerikanischen Literatur um Autoren wie Neruda, Borges und Parra insbesondere Bezüge auf die spanische und französische Literatur von Góngora und Pascal über Baudelaire bis zu Perec sowie auf weitere Klassiker der Moderne in Gestalt von Schriftstellern wie Ernst Jünger oder William Carlos Williams.
