Scomparsa ormai da decenni e data per dispersa, la Tavola Doria - il dipinto raffigurante una scena della battaglia di Anghiari e da alcuni attribuito a Leonardo da Vinci, da altri a un pittore toscano del Cinquecento - è stata ritrovata in una stanza blindata di Ginevra nel maggio 2012, al termine di una lunga e complessa ricerca. Al di là dell'inestimabile valore artistico dell'opera, il suo rientro in Italia è prezioso perché consentirà di approfondire lo studio di una delle pagine più controverse della storia dell'arte del Cinquecento, quella relativa alla commessa che Pier Soderini, gonfaloniere della Repubblica fiorentina, fece a Leonardo da Vinci nel 1503. La Signoria di Firenze, infatti, aveva deciso di affidare a lui e a Michelangelo il compito di illustrare due degli episodi più gloriosi della sua storia: le vittorie conseguite sulle truppe di Filippo Maria Visconti guidate dal condottiero Niccolò Piccinino ad Anghiari il 29 giugno 1440 e sui pisani a Càscina il 28 luglio 1364. Louis Godart, archeologo e consigliere per la conservazione del patrimonio artistico del presidente della Repubblica, avanza l'ipotesi, suffragata da una minuziosa analisi iconografica, che la Tavola Doria sia l'episodio centrale del cartone preparatorio, di cui parlano le fonti cinquecentesche, eseguito da Leonardo e da alcuni collaboratori nella Sala del Papa di Santa Maria Novella, prima di trasferirsi nel Salone dei Cinquecento di Palazzo Vecchio per realizzare l'affresco. Il 6 giugno 1505 Leonardo mise mano all'opera, ma subito, come ricorda Vasari, abbandonò il progetto: l'intonaco utilizzato si rivelò inadatto alla parete del Salone e tutto "colò", irrimediabilmente. E così la Tavola Doria costituisce l'unica testimonianza giunta a noi del grandioso progetto leonardesco. Vi sono, per l'autore, ottimi motivi per supporre che nulla della leggendaria Battaglia di Anghiari sia sopravvissuto sotto l'affresco vasariano raffigurante la Battaglia di Scannagallo, che oggi ricopre la parete orientale del grande salone, contrariamente a quanto af- fermano alcuni ricercatori che privilegiano le "moderne tecnologie" rispetto alle ricerche filologiche. Questo prezioso ritrovamento - reso possibile grazie al lavoro investigativo del Comando Carabinieri Tutela Patrimonio Culturale e al tempestivo intervento della magistratura e del ministero per i Beni e le Attività culturali - offre a Godart lo spunto per ricostruire non solo la nascita e le vicissitudini di un capolavoro, ma anche le vite di quanti sono stati coinvolti nel suo lungo e avventuroso viaggio attraverso i secoli, restituendoci il fascino senza tempo della ricerca artistica che li ha accompagnati.

For nearly three centuries Leonardo da Vinci's work was known primarily through the abridged version of his Treatise on Painting, first published in Paris in 1651 and soon translated into all the major European languages. Here for the first time is a study that examines the historical reception of this vastly influential text. This collection charts the varied interpretations of Leonardo's ideas in French, Italian, Spanish, English, German, Dutch, Flemish, Greek, and Polish speaking environments where the Trattato was an important resource for the academic instruction of artists, one of the key sources drawn upon by art theorists, and widely read by a diverse network of artists, architects, biographers, natural philosophers, translators, astronomers, publishers, engineers, theologians, aristocrats, lawyers, politicians, entrepreneurs, and collectors. The cross-cultural approach employed here demonstrates that Leonardo's Treatise on Painting is an ideal case study through which to chart the institutionalization of art in Europe and beyond for 400 years. The volume includes original essays by scholars studying a wide variety of national and institutional settings. The coherence of the volume is established by the shared subject matter and interpretative aim: to understand how Leonardo's ideas were used. With its focus on the active reception of an important text overlooked in studies of the artist's solitary genius, the collection takes Leonardo studies to a new level of historical inquiry. Leonardo da Vinci's most significant contribution to Western art was his interpretation of painting as a science grounded in geometry and direct observation of nature. One of the most important questions to emerge from this study is, what enabled the same text to produce so many different styles of painting?
