According to Robert Graysmith, author of Zodiac and Zodiac Unmasked, "After Jack the Ripper and before Son of Sam there is only one name their equal in terror: the deadly, elusive, and mysterious Zodiac."The Zodiac Killer terrorized the California, Bay Area cities of Benicia, Vallejo, Napa and San Francisco in the late sixties. He also sent letters and cryptograms to the San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco Chronicle and the Vallejo Times Herald. Although it has been 47 years since he killed David Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen on Lake Herman Road in Benicia, he has never been caught!! On February 14, 1974, 41 years ago, the Zodiac sent a letter to the San Francisco Chronicle claiming 37 victims. Prior to that, the Zodiac sent a letter to the Chronicle stating, "This is the Zodiac speaking. Up to the end of Oct. I have killed 7 people. I have grown rather angry with the police for their telling lies about me. So I shall change the way the collecting of slaves. I shall no longer announce to anyone when I commit my murders. They shall look like routine robberies, killings of anger and a few fake accidents, etc." So, at this time, we don't know how many more people he may have killed. I grew up in the small town of Benicia. The first, Zodiac, double homicide took place on Lake Herman Road, about three miles from my home. I was a young girl at that time and lived in constant fear for many years after that. In the early seventies, I met a man from Vallejo and we were later married and had four children. After 24 years of marriage, I finally divorced him. This story is about my ex-husband, whom I believe was the Zodiac Killer. I have put together the first few chapters of this book from bits and pieces of his childhood that I learned from him and his family during our marriage. The rest of the book covers Zodiac's 37 attacks from December 20, 1968 to February, 1974. (We met in August of 1972 and were married in 1975.) I am also planning to write a sequel to this book that will cover the time period from when we first met until the present. In that book, I hope to relate to my readers what it is like to unknowingly be married to a serial killer!! I also want to convey how it affected my life during the marriage and after it had ended. After I realized that my ex-husband could possibly be the Zodiac Killer, I contacted law enforcement agents in the Bay Area several times, but each time, I got very little response. (The first officer that I talked to sent my information to two profilers and they both agreed that there was a possibility that my ex was the Zodiac.) Interestingly, although they hope that a relative or friend will come forward someday with some bit of information that will lead to the capture and arrest of the killer, they reject anything coming from an ex-wife who might be seeking revenge!! (But, who would be more likely to eventually pick up on a clue? And, what couple would be more likely to get a divorce?) As a last resort, I finally decided to write a book. Obviously, the police weren't going to help me and I wasn't allowed to take the law into my own hands. So, the only weapon that remained was my "typewriter." And, I am sure that we are all aware of the saying, "The pen is mightier than the sword." Anyway, my real hope is that, some how, this book will be used to bring the Zodiac to justice for his 37 victims, as well as myself!!
