El pensamiento de Aristóteles abarca prácticamente todas las facetas de la investigación intelectual. Aristóteles hizo filosofía en sentido amplio, que también describiría como “ciencia”. Distingue tres tipos de filosofías, ciencias o saberes: saber práctico, que incluye la ética y la política; saber productivo, el estudio de las artes, incluida la poética; y saber teórico, puramente contemplativo al no intervenir en el objeto de estudio, que abarca la física, las matemáticas y la metafísica. Existen tres obras sobre ética atribuidas a Aristóteles sobre ética: la Ética nicomáquea, la Ética eudemia y la Magna moralia (de la cual todavía se duda su autoría). Aristóteles consideraba que la ética era un estudio práctico más que teórico, es decir, uno destinado a ser bueno y hacer el bien en lugar de saberlo por sí mismo, y sostuvo lo que hoy se llama una ética de las virtudes. La ética de Platón, al igual que la socrática, identificaba el bien con el conocimiento, caracterizándose por un marcado intelectualismo.
