This book presents a series of essays on some of the most challenging issues which are facing Irish Studies scholars in the twenty-first century. It aims to provide a variety of views on topics such as gender, media, the North and the revision of traditional approaches to Irish studies as seen by a number of scholars at the end of the first decade of the third millennium. The breadth of scope is justified by the dynamic growth of the field over the last decade and points to the diverse academic and national backgrounds of the authors of the chapters and the enthusiasm with which the cultural concerns of the island of Ireland are tackled in other countries. Writers from Austria, Brazil, Canada, Germany and Spain provide original viewpoints on Irish topics which are as bold as they are refreshing. The awareness of the unique situation of Ireland and her cultural practices has provided a scenario in which interest in the literature, art, film and other cultural manifestations is great, and it is hoped that this volume will play a part in stimulating debate about some of the fascinating areas of Irish cultural matters discussed herein and will provide a useful work of reference for anyone interested in the rich and ample field of Irish Studies.

Irish Writers And The Thirties written by Katrina Goldstone and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-29 with History categories.

This original study focusing on four Irish writers – Leslie Daiken, Charles Donnelly, Ewart Milne and Michael Sayers – retrieves a hitherto neglected episode of Thirties literary history which highlights the local and global aspects of Popular Front cultural movements. From interwar London to the Spanish Civil War and the USSR, the book examines the lives and work of Irish writers through their writings, their witness texts and their political activism. The relationships of these writers to George Orwell, Samuel Beckett, T.S. Eliot, Nancy Cunard, William Carlos Williams and other figures of cultural significance within the interwar period sheds new light on the internationalist aspects of a Leftist cultural history. The book also explores how Irish literary women on the Left defied marginalization. The impetus of the book is not merely to perform an act of literary salvage but to find new ways of re-imagining what might be said to constitute Irish literature mid-twentieth century; and to illustrate how Irish writers played a role in a transforming political moment of the twentieth century. It will be of interest to scholars and students of cultural history and literature, Irish diaspora studies, Jewish studies, and the social and literary history of the Thirties.

The 13th International Conference on the Literature of Region and Nation, held at Biwako in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, in the summer of 2010, fully maintained the tradition established in this long-running conference series of bringing together scholars from many countries and many fields of specialisation. Although the conferences have taken place in widely scattered locations, this was the first to be held in an Asian country; and the opportunity this presented of focusing on the cultural links between East and West was taken up enthusiastically by the participants. Several of the papers explore aspects, sometimes unexpected, of the cultural cross-fertilisation between Japan, or the Orient in general, and the national literatures of the West. Others concentrate on iconic figures from regions of the English-speaking world with strongly-developed individual literary traditions. All the papers have been peer-reviewed, and extensively revised in order to maximise their impact in the written word. The collection demonstrates the stimulating effect of cross-cultural interaction in the field of literary studies of East and West.

In his preface, the author reminds the reader that this is not a book for the absolute beginner. Even the experienced player may not get it on first reading a given tune, but You can expect to enjoy the process of learning... [and experience] the joy of recreating a traditional tune, of making it your own. This is the teacher/ student pact in effect throughout this marvelous book, written for the literary as much as the musical connoisseur. Although no classical violin experience is needed, you will need to know how to hold the fiddle and bow, and be able to play at least simple tunes in the first position. Having the ability to read music will enable you to follow the bowing patterns and left-hand techniques which the author feels are crucial in grasping the playing style.

When Irish culture and economics underwent rapid changes during the Celtic Tiger Years, Anne Enright, Colum McCann and Éilís Ní Dhuibhne began writing. Now that period of Irish history has closed, this study uncovers how their writing captured that unique historical moment. By showing how Ní Dhuibhne's novels act as considered arguments against attempts to disavow the past, how McCann's protagonists come to terms with their history and how Enright's fiction explores connections and relationships with the female body, Susan Cahill's study pinpoints common concerns for contemporary Irish writers: the relationship between the body, memory and history, between generations, and between past and present. Cahill is able to raise wider questions about Irish culture by looking specifically at how writers engage with the body. In exploring the writers' concern with embodied histories, related questions concerning gender, race, and Irishness are brought to the fore. Such interrogations of corporeality alongside history are imperative, making this a significant contribution to ongoing debates of feminist theory in Irish Studies.
