This book considers the meaning of the term, considers the value and characteristics of Google Earth, and discusses the main driving forces of landscape change. Google Earth provides a means whereby one can identify changes in the landscapes of Earth over recent decades. This has been a time of great human activity, and landscapes have been transformed as a result of such factors as land use and land-cover change, climate change, the intensive harnessing of new energy sources, population pressures, and globalization. Many geologists now believe that the whole Earth System is being changed and that there is thus a need to introduce the concept of the Anthropocene. It then looks at specific landscape types, including rivers, coasts, lakes, deserts, tundra, and glaciers.

Preludes To Urbanism written by Augusta McMahon and has been published by McDonald Institute Monographs this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with History categories.

This volume explores early complex society and nascent urbanism, based in studies of Mesopotamia during the fifth-fourth millennia BC. Urbanism in the Near East has traditionally been located in late fourth millennium BC southern Mesopotamia (south Iraq); but recent excavations and surveys in northeast Syria and southeast Turkey have identified a distinctively northern Mesopotamian variant of this development, which can be dated to the early fourth millennium BC. The authors use multiscalar approaches, including material culture based studies, settlement archaeology and regional surveys, to achieve an understanding of the dynamics of early urbanism across this key region. The book reveals the variety of social, economic and political relationships that are implicit within an urban center and an urbanized society. Northeast Syria from 2006 to 2011.

Babylon written by Paul Kriwaczek and has been published by Atlantic Books Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-07 with History categories.

In Babylon, Paul Kriwaczek tells the story of ancient Mesopotamia from the earliest settlements around 5400 BC, to the eclipse of Babylon by the Persians in the sixth century BC. He chronicles the rise and fall of dynastic power during this period; he examines its numerous material, social and cultural innovations and inventions: The wheel, civil, engineering, building bricks, the centralized state, the division of labour, organised religion, sculpture, education, mathematics, law and monumental building. At the heart of Kriwaczek's magisterial account, though, is the glory of Babylon - 'gateway to the gods' - which rose to glorious prominence under the Amorite king Hammurabi, who unified Babylonia between 1800 and 1750 BC. While Babylonian power would rise and fall over the ensuing centuries, it retained its importance as a cultural, religious and political centre until its fall to Cyrus the Great of Persia in 539 BC.

On The Nature Of The Gods written by Marcus Tullius Cicero and has been published by Fortress of the Mind Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-08-25 with Philosophy categories.

This new, original translation of Cicero's On the Nature of the Gods is the first to appear in many years. Do the gods exist? Is there a divine order to the universe? And if there is, what is humanity’s role in this grand conception? Does a divine power care about human affairs? These are just a few of the profound questions discussed in Cicero’s philosophical masterpiece. In dialogues that showcase the differing perspectives of the Stoic, Epicurean, and Academic schools, Cicero delves into a stunning variety of subjects, including human anatomy, theology, cosmology, astronomy, biology, and divination. The persistent themes of Cicero’s vision are his insistence on a moral basis for human conduct, the existence of free will and human agency, and his soaring faith in the unique role reserved for the human race in the universe’s destiny. It is no wonder that Voltaire called On the Nature of the Gods, along with Cicero’s Tusculan Disputations, “[the] two most beautiful works ever composed by human wisdom.” Translator Quintus Curtius has returned to the original Latin text to produce a fresh, modern, illustrated English edition that breathes new life into a long-neglected classic of Western thought. The text is extensively annotated, and formatted using modern dialogue conventions for ease of reading. Also included are an explanatory introduction, topical content list, and a comprehensive index. Cicero’s seminal work has much to tell us today, and with this translation has never been more accessible to the modern reader.
