Quality-Oriented Design of Business Processes introduces a modeling method, `Integrated Enterprise Modelling' (IEM), which is related to ISO standards and provides manufacturing organizations with the means of analyzing, improving, and redesigning their business processes. The purpose of the book is to improve the quality of products and organizational performance through optimizing complex business processes and organizational design. Clearly, changing markets and innovative competitors force each company to study and improve its organization, its business processes, and the technologies it employs. Whoever drops behind in these times loses market share and endangers the long-term existence of the company. Hence, it is critical to realign the entire corporate planning and design throughout the value-added chain to speed up the business processes. The book is the result of a scientific study funded by the German Federal Ministry for Research and Technology. The authors develop the concept of Quality-Oriented Design of Business Processes, which is the underlying motivation for IEM. Moreover IEM is the engine for achieving the integration of quality management into the design and planning of business processes. The book discusses the IEM method thoroughly and applies it to the concept of `Quality-Oriented Design of Business Processes' throughout the book. This concept is illustrated with an example of a company. Finally, the book describes the entry of the IEM method into national, European and international standardization.

Hermann & Valentiny first came to public attention in the 1980s with their villa in the Rauchstrasse, a part of the International Building Exhibition in Berlin, when postmodernism was at its peak in Europe. Since then the office which is based in Vienna and Remerschen has built in Austria, Luxembourg and Germany, and its architecture has progressed in both form and content. Representing Luxembourg at the architecture biennale in Venice, Hermann & Valentiny reveal how architecture and art can be successfully combined. This up-to-date report "Now" illustrates how conceptual questions and a comparatively restricted choice of materials dominate the work of Hermann & Valentiny. Wherever possible they use concrete to replace plaster; glass maintains its unique role; metal mesh acts as a membrane, allowing historical architecture to shimmer through. Moreover, colour has a special function in their architecture. Not just black and white, but also tomato red, melon yellow, peppermint green... Finally, the book reveals the architects' general concepts which incorporate the living, the natural surroundings in the plans.

In this book we are trying to illuminate the persistent and nag ging questions of how mind, life, and the essence of being relate to brain mechanisms. We do that not because we have a commit ment to bear witness to the boring issue of reductionism but be cause we want to know more about what it's all about. How, in deed, does the brain work? How does it allow us to love, hate, see, cry, suffer, and ultimately understand Kepler's laws? We try to uncover clues to these staggering questions by con sidering the results of our studies on the bisected brain. Several years back, one of us wrote a book with that title, and the ap proach was to describe how brain and behavior are affected when one takes the brain apart. In the present book, we are ready to put it back together, and go beyond, for we feel that split-brain studies are now at the point of contributing to an understanding of the workings of the integrated mind. We are grateful to Dr. Donald Wilson of the Dartmouth Medi cal School for allowing us to test his patients. We would also like to thank our past and present colleagues, including Richard Naka mura, Gail Risse, Pamela Greenwood, Andy Francis, Andrea El berger, Nick Brecha, Lynn Bengston, and Sally Springer, who have been involved in various facets of the experimental studies on the bisected brain described in this book.
