In this book we are trying to illuminate the persistent and nag ging questions of how mind, life, and the essence of being relate to brain mechanisms. We do that not because we have a commit ment to bear witness to the boring issue of reductionism but be cause we want to know more about what it's all about. How, in deed, does the brain work? How does it allow us to love, hate, see, cry, suffer, and ultimately understand Kepler's laws? We try to uncover clues to these staggering questions by con sidering the results of our studies on the bisected brain. Several years back, one of us wrote a book with that title, and the ap proach was to describe how brain and behavior are affected when one takes the brain apart. In the present book, we are ready to put it back together, and go beyond, for we feel that split-brain studies are now at the point of contributing to an understanding of the workings of the integrated mind. We are grateful to Dr. Donald Wilson of the Dartmouth Medi cal School for allowing us to test his patients. We would also like to thank our past and present colleagues, including Richard Naka mura, Gail Risse, Pamela Greenwood, Andy Francis, Andrea El berger, Nick Brecha, Lynn Bengston, and Sally Springer, who have been involved in various facets of the experimental studies on the bisected brain described in this book.

This book argues that thinking is bounded by neither the brain nor the skin of an organism. Cognitive systems function through integration of neural and bodily functions with the functions of representational vehicles. The integrationist position offers a fresh contribution to the emerging embodied and embedded approach to the study of mind.

Leaders in the cognitive neurosciences address a variety of topics in the field and reflect on Michael Gazzaniga's pioneering work and enduring influence. These essays on a range of topics in the cognitive neurosciences report on the progress in the field over the twenty years of its existence and reflect the many groundbreaking scientific contributions and enduring influence of Michael Gazzaniga, "the godfather of cognitive neuroscience"--founder of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society, founding editor of the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, and editor of the major reference work, The Cognitive Neurosciences, now in its fourth edition (MIT Press, 2009). The essays, grouped into four sections named after four of Gazzaniga's books, combine science and memoir in varying proportions, and offer an authoritative survey of research in cognitive neuroscience. "The Bisected Brain" examines hemispheric topics pioneered by Gazzaniga at the start of his career; "The Integrated Mind" explores the theme of integration by domination; the wide-ranging essays in "The Social Brain" address subjects from genes to neurons to social conversations and networks; the topics explored in "Mind Matters" include evolutionary biology, methodology, and ethics. This book covers recent advances in the understanding of brain structure, function and disorders based on the fundamental principles of physics. It covers a broad range of physical phenomena occurring in the brain circuits for perception, cognition, emotion and action, representing the building blocks of the mind. It provides novel insights into the devastating brain disorders of the mind such as schizophrenia, dementia, autism, aging or addictions, as well as into the new devices for brain repair. The book is aimed at basic researchers in the fields of neuroscience, physics, biophysics and clinicians in the fields of neurology, neurosurgery, psychology, psychiatry.

Integrated Thinking, the New IT, brings together the different functions of the brain, including information-processing, the emotions and the unconscious, to create a new framework that can be applied to human, social, political, global and spiritual development, so that we can respond more appropriately to the changes and challenges we now face. The basis for this new way of thinking is what we think with - the brain itself. We know that the brain adapts to accommodate changes in the outside environment, and that it also produces change through the systems and societies it creates. What is less well known is that the brain seems to use its own internal systems and structures as the model for the social and political systems it creates in the world outside. In other words, the brain creates the world in its own image. This two-way mirror offers two opportunities for change: change the way we think and we change the outside world our brains create, while if we make changes in the way we organise our lives and societies, the brain will respond accordingly. However, before we change anything, it helps to know how it works, so Section 1 of the book gives an overview of how the different parts of the brain work separately and together, using simple diagrams and straightforward language. It describes the stages of human development, looking at both the brain's information processing capabilities and how it helps us progress emotionally, psychologically and morally. Section 1 also looks at what happens when one part of the brain becomes too dominant and others are neglected, and how the brain recycles previously dominant ways of thinking for new uses. If we integrate the different parts, it will reduce internal conflict, we can respond to changing circumstances in the most appropriate way and make best use of the brain's resources and adaptability. Section 2 takes the process of integration a step further by showing how the framework for human development, the New IT, can be applied to social and political development, with particular reference to the UK today. In doing this, we are copying the brain's example of linking internal and external systems and structures. As with personal development, Integrated Thinking could help reduce social conflict, support society in responding to challenges more appropriately and make better use of more evolved parts of our thinking. In addition, Section 2 considers the similarity between the unconscious and the criminal underworld, and also the similarity between the stage in personal development we call the 'midlife crisis' and today's social and political crises. In Section 3, we see how conflicts between the differing ways of thinking in the brain are reflected in conflicts and crises in the wider world, and look particularly at economic, environmental and energy crises. We also consider the effects of the Old IT, Information Technology, on the brain. The final chapter in this Section considers how a new world order might arise, based on this new way of thinking. Section 4 looks at what also needs to be included in Integrated Thinking - the world of the Mind and the spirit. It takes a new look at what is missing from our present mental construct of this world, such as the negative use of the Mind's powers and the role of the feminine. The book ends with hope for a new way of thinking and a new world, and asks a question that brings together the personal and the political in a positive and possibly predictive way. Could the world now be facing a global midlife crisis? Copyright: Sue Pearson 2013

The Crucible Of Consciousness written by Zoltan Torey and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-04-17 with Philosophy categories.

An interdisciplinary examination of the evolutionary breakthroughs that rendered the brain accessible to itself. In The Crucible of Consciousness, Zoltan Torey offers a theory of the mind and its central role in evolution. He traces the evolutionary breakthrough that rendered the brain accessible to itself and shows how the mind-boosted brain works. He identifies what it is that separates the human's self-reflective consciousness from mere animal awareness, and he maps its neural and linguistic underpinnings. And he argues, controversially, that the neural technicalities of reflective awareness can be neither algorithmic nor spiritual—neither a computer nor a ghost in the machine. The human mind is unique; it is not only the epicenter of our knowledge but also the outer limit of our intellectual reach. Not to solve the riddle of the self-aware mind, writes Torey, goes against the evolutionary thrust that created it. Torey proposes a model that brings into a single focus all the elements that make up the puzzle: how the brain works, its functional components and their interactions; how language evolved and how syntax evolved out of the semantic substrate by way of neural transactions; and why the mind-endowed brain deceives itself with entelechy-type impressions. Torey first traces the language-linked emergence of the mind, the subsystem of the brain that enables it to be aware of itself. He then explores this system: how consciousness works, why it is not transparent to introspection, and what sense it makes in the context of evolution. The “consciousness revolution” and the integrative focus of neuroscience have made it possible to make concrete formerly mysterious ideas about the human mind. Torey's model of the mind is the logical outcome of this, highlighting a coherent and meaningful role for a reflectively aware humanity.
