Das sudetendeutsche Organisationswesen in den westlichen Besatzungszonen bzw. der Bundesrepublik Deutschland zwischen 1945 und 1955 wird in diesem Buch multiperspektivisch behandelt. Es bezweckt eine Neubewertung der deutsch-tschechischen Beziehungen jenseits von überkommenen «Volksgruppen»-Vorstellungen. Zentral steht in der Arbeit die Frage der Kontinuität: Das sudetendeutsche Verbandsspektrum der Nachkriegszeit war kein Produkt von «Flucht und Vertreibung», sondern setzte zumeist fort, was bereits vor 1945 im sudetendeutschen Milieu angelegt war. Die Studie geht davon aus, dass die Sudetendeutschen nicht identisch sind mit der deutschen Minderheit in der Tschechoslowakei, sondern nur deren «völkisches» Spektrum repräsentierten, das sich nach 1945 in einem neuen Umfeld konstituierte.

In the aftermath of World War II, twelve million German expellees lost their homes in Central and Eastern Europe. The overwhelming majority came to occupied Germany. However, expellees found themselves also stranded in Western Europe, Africa and the Americas, which is often overlooked by researchers and the public. Going beyond the standard narratives of flight, vigilante evictions and transfers, this book follows expellees in West Germany and Canada and shows, for example, how German prisoners-of-war, exilees or immigrants experienced the expulsions in distant Canada. As the author illustrates making extensive use of oral histories, their experiences were an integral part of the multi-faceted expellee story even though they were physically absent from their homes. Juxtaposing the record of two countries with disparate public discourses on immigration, the author also reveals how in both countries expellees eventually adopted national identities which, based on their ethno-regional heritage, reflected their experience of extreme nationalism, war and expulsion as well as the initially difficult settlement into a new political, social and cultural environment.

Since 1945, what ‘conservative’ means has troubled intellectuals, politicians and parties in the United Kingdom and West Germany. In Britain conservatism was an accepted term of the political vocabulary, denoting a particular tradition of political thought and practice. In West Germany, by contrast, conservatism was a difficult concept for the young democracy to swallow. It carried a heavy antiliberal and antidemocratic burden and led people to question whether there was a place for conservatism within democratic culture after all. The Guardians of Concepts scrutinizes the debates about conservatism in the UK and the Federal Republic of Germany from the late 1940s to the early 1980s. Informed by historical semantics, it conceives of conservatism as a flexible linguistic structure, and shows the importance of language for the self-understanding of many conservatives, who not by chance, have regarded themselves as the guardians of concepts. The intense national and transnational debates about the meaning of conservatism had far-reaching consequences and continue to influence politics today.

The Iron Curtain did not exist—at least not as we usually imagine it. Rather than a stark, unbroken line dividing East and West in Cold War Europe, the Iron Curtain was instead made up of distinct landscapes, many in the grip of divergent historical and cultural forces for decades, if not centuries. This book traces a genealogy of one such landscape—the woods between Czechoslovakia and West Germany—to debunk our misconceptions about the iconic partition. Yuliya Komska transports readers to the western edge of the Bohemian Forest, one of Europe’s oldest borderlands, where in the 1950s civilians set out to shape the so-called prayer wall. A chain of new and repurposed pilgrimage sites, lookout towers, and monuments, the prayer wall placed two long-standing German obsessions, forest and border, at the heart of the century’s most protracted conflict. Komska illustrates how civilians used the prayer wall to engage with and contribute to the new political and religious landscape. In the process, she relates West Germany’s quiet sylvan periphery to the tragic pitch prevalent along the Iron Curtain’s better-known segments. The socialist states of Eastern Europe closely and suspiciously observed the expellee organizations that had emerged in the Federal Republic since the late 1940s, including their political activities. This volume, for the first time, takes a look at this ‘enemy and foreign observation’ by the intelligence services, using various case studies from the GDR, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania and Yugoslavia. It examines what the secret services knew about the expellee functionaries and their past, and asks what information was collected and how it was used. In addition, the role of the Germans who remained in the socialist states and the Aussiedler, who came to the FRG and formed a link between the expellees and their ‘old homeland’, is examined. The volume thus makes an important contribution to research on the perception of the expellee organizations in the socialist states, on the work of the security services, and on bilateral contacts during the ‘Cold War’.

Der Verfasser dieser Zeilen hatte bei der Erstellung der vorliegenden Untersuchung das Glück, sich mit mehreren seiner bevorzugten Interessengebiete intensiv auseinandersetzen zu können: Von den bayerisch-böhmischen Beziehungen in historischer Perspektive über die deutsche Verbände- und Parteienlandschaft bis hin zur CSU als spezielles Forschun- objekt reicht die Spannbreite dieser Studie, die einen innen- wie außenpolitischen Bezug aufweist. Der Ausgangspunkt und Ursprung, welcher schließlich zu vorliegender D- sertation führte, liegt einige Jahre zurück und lässt sich auf eine einfache Fragestellung reduzieren, die dem Autor bereits während des Studiums ins Auge sprang: Wieso ist das Verhältnis zwischen Deutschland und speziell Bayern sowie dem tschechischen Nachb- land immer wieder Belastungen ausgesetzt, obwohl die Vorgaben eigentlich jeweils etwas anderes erwarten lassen? Die Beantwortung dieser Frage, die eher einem außenpolitischen Blickwinkel des bilateralen Verhältnisses zweier Staaten entsprang, führte im Folgenden zu einem innenpolitischen Fokus und der Beziehung zwischen Vertriebenenverbänden und Unionsparteien. Während die Frage nach den atmosphärischen Störungen vor allem zwischen Bayern und Tschechien mit historisch bedingten Problemlagen und der speziellen Beziehung zwischen Vertriebenen und Unionsparteien bzw. konkret der Sudetendeutschen Landsmannschaft auf die Tschechienpolitik der CSU recht schnell beantwortet werden konnte, warf eben dies aber neue, komplexere Fragestellungen auf.
