Diese geraten in einen Konflikt mit der Gesellschaft, indem sie versuchen, sich aus der patriarchalischen Vorherrschaft der Männer zu befreien. Sie leiden in der Ehe und begeben sich auf die Suche nach ihrem individuellen Glück. Nur Nora Helmer überlebt, befreit sich und ist in der Lage, die geltenden Konventionen in Frage zu stellen: ‘Ich muß mich davon überzeugen, wer recht hat, die Gesellschaft oder ich.’ Auch Fontane schließt sich dieser Thematik an. Das bekannteste Beispiel ist Effi Briest: Durch eine Affäre versucht sie aus ihrer unglücklichen Ehe auszubrechen, wird jedoch von Familie und Gesellschaft verstoßen und stirbt. Ein ähnliches Schicksal widerfährt auch anderen Frauenfiguren aus Fontanes Oeuvre. Sie alle sind sich in einer bestimmten Weise ähnlich. Die einen teilen ihr Schicksal, die anderen haben ein gemeinsames Ende, wobei alle einer Frage nachgehen: Wer hat Recht, sie oder die Gesellschaft?
