Die vorliegende Studie untersucht anhand von Gotthold Ephraim Lessings bürgerlichen Trauerspielen ‘Miß Sara Sampson‘ und ‘Emilia Galotti‘, ob die in seinen Werken dargestellten Weiblichkeitsentwürfe im Einklang mit dem allgemeingültigen Geschlechterverständnis des 18. Jahrhunderts stehen oder ob Lessing eine modernere Auffassung bezüglich der Rolle der Frau eingenommen hat. In diesem Zusammenhang wird auch der Frage nachgegangen, ob Lessing als Sympathisant bzw. Fürsprecher einer Aufwertung der weiblichen Sphäre bzw. einer partiellen Loslösung vom traditionell vorherrschenden Frauenbild des 18. Jahrhunderts begriffen werden kann. Berechtigung erfährt diese Untersuchung vor dem Hintergrund von Lessings Einordnung als ‘Dramatiker der Aufklärung‘, der sich jenen vernunftorientierten Maximen verpflichtet fühlte, die - im Sinne gegenwärtig geführter Debatten - ‘den Menschen’ in den Vordergrund stellte und nicht dessen Geschlechtszugehörigkeit.
