The garden at Dessau-Wörlitz is one of the most remarkable and most significant in the whole of Europe. Since the year 2000 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site - one of very few gardens so distinguished. Created in the eighteenth century by Prince Franz of Anhalt Dessau, following on from his travels in France and Britain, and incorporating also numerous palaces, lakes and parks, the result is a huge and wonderful cultural landscape that is one of the greatest sights of Germany, and this large and authoritative book is the first to explore and illustrate it in all its glory and its complexity.

Developed in the second half of the eighteenth century as the earliest landscaped garden in Central Europe, the garden grounds of Wörlitz are the heart of the Dessau-Wörlitz garden realm. When Prince Leopold Friedrich Franz (1740-1817) became regent in Anhalt-Dessau in 1758, he introduced multifaceted reforms, with youthful energy and daring, to advance his country's economy, wealth, and education. His embrace of new architectural and landscape garden-design principles reflected his enlightened-humanistic sensibility. In a way, the garden grounds of Wörlitz were an antithesis to the stringent and artificial Baroque style that was then customary.

This first comprehensive architectural guide on Dessau-Roßlau and Wörlitz, compiled by the Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau and the Kulturstiftung DessauWörlitz, presents an expert overview of more than 120 buildings and rural expanses with great care and attention given to detail. A multifaceted overall picture arises of a region which not only draws on its rich cultural and historic heritage, but also plans for the future and ventures out into new terrain. In the shape of the Gartenreich Dessau-Wörlitz and the Bauhaus ensemble, the city of Dessau-Roßlau and its environs encompass two UNESCO World Heritage sites. These encompass architectural subjects and expanses, both urban and rural, which invite much attention beyond the region itself and have had a lasting impact on the international stage. Beyond this, however, there are a whole host of notable historic and contemporary buildings in Dessau and its surroundings. As the residence of the princes and dukes of Anhalt in the age of Enlightenment and a centre of intellectual and cultural expansion at European level, the city developed into a significant industrial location as of the second half of the nineteenth century. Today, Dessau's architectural profile is marked by contrasts: alongside restored historic buildings and standard socialist dwellings, there are also experimental refurbishment projects and ambitious new developments to be found.

At the tender age of seventeen, naturalist Georg Forster (1754-94) embarked with the famous Captain James Cook on a voyage around the world. During the trip, Forster explored recently discovered regions, including New Zealand, New Caledonia, Tahiti, and Tonga. Shortly after his return in 1775, Forster met in London with Prince Franz and Princess Louise of Anhalt-Dessau. There, Forster presented them with numerous Polynesian objects, which returned with the royal couple to the German town of Wörlitz. Today, amid resurgent interest in Forster and his work, those items, now known as the South Seas collection, are available to the public as part of Germany's first permanent Forster exhibition. Brimming with full-color images, Georg Forster is the catalog for the exhibition, which is housed in the palace of the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This book bursts to life with photographs, historic paintings, and drawings, as well as lively quotations by Forster and his contemporaries. From the grass skirt of a Tahitian dancer to maces from Tonga to an axe of jade-green nephrite from New Zealand, Georg Forster provides new perspectives on these priceless artifacts and vividly brings back to life Forster and Cook's momentous voyage.

Early modern princely courts were not only inhabited by humans, but also by a large number of animals. This coexistence of non-human living beings had crucial impacts on the spatial organization, the social composition and cultural life at these courts. The contributions enrich our knowledge on another aspect of court life and invite to reconsider our basic understandings of court, courtiers and court society.
