Publikacja ta powstała jako rezultat badań nad marginesami społecznymi miasta Poznania i stanowi całość złożoną z kilkudziesięciu opracowań pod wspólnym tytułem „Życie na skraju – marginesy społeczne wielkiego miasta”, proponując szerokie tematycznie spektrum marginalizacji społecznej, od perspektywy historycznej miasta Poznania, po współczesne problemy jego mieszkańców, funkcjonujących na marginesach różnych przestrzeni społecznych miasta. Zróżnicowany charakter publikacji wynika z międzyśrodowiskowego charakteru badań, łączącego w jeden zespół zarówno pracowników naukowych jak i praktyków, wywodzących się z poznańskich instytucji i organizacji pozarządowych, działających w obszarze społecznego wykluczenia. Potrzeba stałej wymiany czy dialogu między „światem nauki” i „światem praktyki” jest powszechnie akceptowana, co nie oznacza, że „teoria” i „praktyka” mówią tym samym językiem. Jak twierdził Alfred Schütz (1971), każda dziedzina ma swoją „prowincję znaczeń”, ma swoją grę językową. Istnieje oczywiście możliwość wymiany między tymi obszarami, co wymaga zabiegów „tłumaczenia” stosowanych pojęć czy to w języku potocznym czy naukowym. Stąd mogą się rodzić nieporozumienia między tymi dwoma „światami”. Często inne wartości, cele czy standardy przyświecają nauce a inne praktyce, co nie oznacza, że nauka rezygnuje z ambicji bycia „praktyczną” a praktyka często posługuje się „teoriami” i nie tylko „teoriami życia potocznego”. Język nauki jest często przetwarzany przez praktykę, teorie przyjmują postać zasad kierujących działaniami, powstaje coś w rodzaju „technologii społecznej”. Oczywiście nauka może również rekomendować praktyczne zmiany a praktyka dostarczać doświadczeń, które mogą być przedmiotem ewaluacji ze strony nauki, przydatność nauki dla praktyki wyraża się także poprzez raporty z badań, których wyniki stanowią podstawę wielu zamieszczonych tu artykułów.

Pisząc o jakości życia, a więc o efektach decyzji jednostek, nie sposób pominąć aspektów pozamaterialnych, które oddziałują na kształtowanie się zachowań ludzkich – kwestie wyznawanego systemu wartości, sposoby spędzania czasu wolnego, warunki mieszkaniowe czy poziom zaspokojenia potrzeb intelektualnych oraz społecznych – to jedynie przykłady niektórych z nich. Badanie jakości życia jest problemem trudnym nie tylko ze względu na złożoność samego zjawiska, lecz także z powodu komplikacji pojawiających się podczas definiowania obszaru tego tematu. Warto jednak pamiętać, że ocena skuteczności działań wynikających z badań społecznych, w tym również z ekonomii, jest formułowana w odniesieniu do przemian, jakie generowane są zarówno w sferze materialnej, jak i pozamaterialnej. Niniejsza praca jest więc próbą zwrócenia uwagi na zależności pozamaterialne wynikające z działalności na płaszczyźnie gospodarczej. z Wprowadzenia Ze względu na złożoność tytułowego zagadnienia prezentowana monografia dotyczy wybranych elementów, które wpływają na jakość życia.
