Pt. I (pp. 13-91), "Żydzi", discusses the situation of the Jewish minority between 1945-50. Anti-Jewish disturbances occurred twice in Kraków in the summer of 1945, on 27 July and 11 August. Pp. 31-46 describe the events of 11 August, which were the most serious. One Jewish woman was killed, a synagogue was burned, tens of Jews were beaten on the streets, and the apartments of some Jews were robbed. Quotes from documents describing the pogrom, produced by various institutions - e.g. the Information and Propaganda Office, the Militia, the Security Service, the Workers' Party, the Jewish Committee. Quotes, as well, from the communist press. Presents various opinions on the causes of the pogrom, among them rumors about "Jews who murdered Polish children" and "a fascist provocation". Supports the view that the communists used these events for their own propaganda aims. Concludes that the anti-Jewish disturbances in Kraków and various forms of hostilities which the Jews experienced in other localities of the Kraków voivodship spurred the emigration of Jews from Poland.

The melting pot is no more. Where not very long ago we sought assimilation, we now pursue multiculturalism. Nowhere has this transformation been more evident than in the public schools, where a traditional Eurocentric curriculum has yielded to diversity--and, often, to confrontation and confusion. In a book that brings clarity and reason to this highly charged issue, Nathan Glazer explores these sweeping changes. He offers an incisive account of why we all--advocates and skeptics alike--have become multiculturalists, and what this means for national unity, civil society, and the education of our youth. Focusing particularly on the impact in public schools, Glazer dissects the four issues uppermost in the minds of people on both sides of the multicultural fence: Whose "truth" do we recognize in the curriculum? Will an emphasis on ethnic roots undermine or strengthen our national unity in the face of international disorder? Will attention to social injustice, past and present, increase or decrease civil disharmony and strife? Does a multicultural curriculum enhance learning, by engaging students' interest and by raising students' self-esteem, or does it teach irrelevance at best and fantasy at worst? Glazer argues cogently that multiculturalism arose from the failure of mainstream society to assimilate African Americans; anger and frustration at their continuing separation gave black Americans the impetus for rejecting traditions that excluded them. But, willingly or not, "we are all multiculturalists now," Glazer asserts, and his book gives us the clearest picture yet of what there is to know, to fear, and to ask of ourselves in this new identity.

There is little question that the descendants of the new European immigrant groups from Southern, Central, and Eastern Europe have done very well in the United States, reaching levels of achievement far above blacks. Yet the new Europeans began to migrate to the United States in 1880, a time when blacks were no longer slaves. Why have the new immigrants fared better than the blacks? This volume focuses on the historical origins of the current differences between the groups. Professor Lieberson scoured early U. S. censuses and used a variety of offbeat information sources to develop data that would throw light on this question, as well as provide new information on occupations at the turn of the century, finding remarkable parallels between the black position in the urban South and the urban North. He examines and compares progress in education and in politics between the new Europeans and the blacks. What were the effects of segregation? Why did labor unions discriminate more severely against blacks than against the new immigrant groups? This book will generate a fresh interpretation of the origins of black-new European differences, one which explains why other nonwhite groups, such as the Chinese and Japanese, have done relatively well.
