Der Philosoph, Humanist und Theologe Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560), neben Martin Luther treibende Kraft der deutschen und europäischen Kirchenreformation, berichtet diesem in bewegten Worten von der schwierigen Lage der Glaubensgenossen beim Reichstag in Augsburg 1530: "Täglich strömen hierher Sophisten und Mönche, um den Haß des Kaisers gegen uns zu schüren [...] Wir kämpfen hier allein und verlassen mit unendlichen Gefahren." Luther wird in dem Brief um Antwort, Rat und Beistand beschworen. Dem Kaiser sei die Confessio, die Verteidigungsschrift der Lutheraner, überreicht worden, die Melanchthon Luther zum Lesen gesandt habe.
