The general view of scholars is that the Kabbalah had no meaningful influence on Leibniz's thought. } But on the basis of new evidence I am convinced that the question must be reopened. The Kabbalah did influence Leibniz, and a recognition of this will lead to both a better understanding of the supposed "quirkiness,,2 of Leibniz's philosophy and an appreciation ofthe Kabbalah as an integral but hitherto ignored factor in the emergence of the modem secular and scientifically oriented world. During the past twenty years there has been increasing willingness to recognize the important ways in which mystical and occult thinking contributed to the development of science and the emergence 3 of toleration. However, the Kabbalah, particularly the Lurianic Kabbalah with its monistic vitalism and optimistic philosophy of perfectionism and universal salvation, has not yet been integrated into the new historiography, although it richly deserves to be. On the basis of manuscripts in libraries at Hanover and Wolfenbiittel, it is clear that Leibniz's relationship with Francis Mercury van Helmont (1614- 1698) and Christian Knorr von Rosenroth (1636-1689), the two leading Christian Kabbalists of the period, was much closer than previously imagined and that his direct knowledge of their writings, especially the collection of 4 kabbalistic texts they published in the Kabbala Denudata, was far more detailed than most scholars have realized. During 1688 Leibniz spent more than a month at Sulzbach with von Rosenroth.

The second volume of Dr Joseph Needham's great work Science and Civilisation in China is devoted to the history of scientific thought. Beginning with ancient times, it describes the Confucian milieu in which arose the organic naturalism of the great Taoist school, the scientific philosophy of the Mohists and Logicians, and the quantitative materialism of the Legalists. Thus we are brought on to the fundamental ideas which dominated scientific thinking in the Chinese middle ages. The author opens his discussion by considering the remote and pictographic origins of words fundamental in scientific discourse, and then sets forth the influential doctrines of the Two Forces and the Five Elements. Subsequently he writes of the important sceptical tradition, the effects of Buddhist thought, and the Neo-Confucian climax of Chinese naturalism. Last comes a discussion of the conception of Laws of Nature in China and the West.

Sobre el libro: Son diversos los caminos que se pueden recorrer para exponer la complejidad que el pensamiento leibniziano ofrece a la comprensión; caminos que se derivan, entre otras cosas, de las múltiples facetas de su personalidad científica y humana, así como de la abundancia y dispersión de sus escritos. En esta obra se ha escogido uno de los muchos caminos posibles: hacer un seguimiento del principio de continuidad, que permite acceder a las diversas parcelas de su pensamiento. El principio de continuidad se presenta, pues, como el ovillo de hilo mágico de Ariadna gracias al cual podemos guiarnos a través del laberinto o de los laberintos que nos muestra Leibniz. Precisamente, la del laberinto es una de sus metáforas favoritas. Son dos los laberintos donde el filósofo de los principios cree que se extravía nuestra razón: el del continuo, que hace referencia al problema de la continuidad y las antinomias del infinito; y el laberinto que hace referencia al problema de la libertad y la necesidad. Sobre el autor: Eva Álvarez Martino (Madrid, 1971) es doctora en Filosofía por la Universidad de Oviedo, institución en la que lleva ejerciendo su docencia desde el año 1997. Fue Premio Fin de Carrera Benito Feijoo en el año 1996 y también obtuvo la Mención especial en los Estudios de Filosofía en reconocimiento al expediente y curriculum académico en la convocatoria de los Premios Nacionales de Estudios Universitarios. Tal vez, Nuevos ensayos sobre el entendimiento humano, obra publicada póstumamente en 1765, sea la más representativa de la voracidad intelectual de G. W. Leibniz. En ella aparecen múltiples referencias a los más variados campos del saber y a los más diversos autores sin por ello ceder un ápice de profundidad en la forma de pensar sobre unos y otros. El pensamiento de Leibniz arranca de un diálogo con los problemas y autores de su época, pretendiendo constituirse en la filosofía de la reunificación de la cristiandad. De ahí su atención a Spinoza y sus intentos frustrados de dialogar con Locke, cuyo Ensayo sobre el entendimiento humano (1690) provocó la redacción entre el verano de 1703 y enero de 1704, del grueso de estos Nuevos ensayos sobre el conocimiento humano. En ellos Leibniz intenta plantear una contraposición entre las diversas concepciones globales del mundo, lo que arrastra tras de sí a todos los campos del saber. La insistencia en la inmortalidad del alma y su inseparabilidad del cuerpo, la indestructibilidad de las mónadas, la universalidad de su percepción o el optimismo leibniziano son algunos de los temas abordados en esta obra, sin duda una de las más profundas e inclasificables del pensamiento filosófico europeo.
