Elizabeth was born on April 21, 1926, and baptized Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor at the chapel of Buckingham Palace. She was the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York. She was educated at home with her younger sister, Princess Margaret, and subsequently served as a subaltern in the Auxiliary Territorial Service during World War II, attaining the rank of Junior Commander. In 1947, she wed a gorgeous young naval officer, Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, a distant relative she met when she was 13 years old. He was the son of Prince Andrew of Greece and the great-great-grandson of Queen Victoria. Their first child, Prince Charles, was born in 1948, followed two years later by his sister, Princess Anne. In 1952, when her father's sickness prevented him from visiting Australia and New Zealand, the Princess, escorted by Prince Philip, made the trip in his stead. On February 6, while on the first leg of her vacation in Kenya, Elizabeth learned of King George VI's death and her own succession to the throne. The coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953, and was aired on radio throughout the globe and - at the young Queen's request - on television, bringing the splendor of the occasion to hundreds of millions of people in a manner never previously conceived. Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, the Queen's youngest sons, were the first children born to a reigning monarch since Queen Victoria in 1960 and 1964, respectively. The Queen has seen the dissolution of three of her four children's marriages, and the dissolution of Charles and Andrew's unions, along with a huge fire at Windsor Castle, caused her to refer to 1992 in her Christmas address as an annus horribilis. Recent years may have been tumultuous for the royal family, but there is little question that its titular head has helped maintain the monarchy's historic image while also greatly contributing to the development of its contemporary function. The British queen hosts visiting heads of state and keep close communication with the prime minister, with whom she has a weekly audience in London.
