Excerpt from 150 Rare Japanese Color Prints: Collected by Professor John Getz, New York City; To Be Sold by His Order, Wednesday Evening, January Fourteenth at Eight-Fifteen It was not until near the close of the seventeenth century that the costly painted scrolls, emanating chieﬂy from artists of the Mikado's Court, were supplemented by something within the reach of the less wealthy classes. This field was opened up by l\ioronobu with his simple black prints that were sometimes colored by hand. Later came the Urushi-yé or lacquer prints, when lacquer was mixed with the pig ments to give added brilliancy. After these came the first true color prints, done by'masanobu in two colors (red and green), called beni - yé. These were improved upon by Harunobu, who designed his work for more than two color-blocks; under his guidance and that of Shunsho, the art of color printing was brought to perfection. Excerpt from Rare and Valuable Japanese Color Prints From Three Different Collections: Rare and Beautiful Examples of the Primitives, Excellent Examples of Harunobu, Koriusai, Kiyonaga, and Utamaro, Including Fine Triptychs, an Unusually Important Series of Landscapes by Hokusai and Hiroshige A series of about thirty Chinese color prints may, however, deserve a word of comment. We have all seen Chinese color prints that are in reality hasty reprints of the chieh-tse-yuan hua-chuan or Treatise on Painting from the Mustard Seed Garden, printed in Japan towards 1812, or printed in China about 1890 and 1906. Color and lines of these worthless reprints are equally lacking in character, and give no more idea of the charm and quality of the old prints than an oleograph sold in the country fair gives an idea of the Sistine Madonna. The early Chinese color prints have never been offered in this country and have escaped everybody's vigilance. Only Mr. Langdon Warner, in Philadelphia, treasures an early edition of another Chinese book With color prints, the shi-chu-chai-shu Hua or Register of the Ten Bamboo Hall in Word and Picture and the Far Eastern department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art possesses several of the early prints and also a stone printing slab Which, in my opinion, has been used for color printing.
