This is a paperbound edition of a 2001 book combining biography and larger historical narrative. Guy (history, U. of Natal, South Africa) studies the life of the daughter of the Bishop of Natal, Hariette Colenso, as a window into the continuing process of imperialism and colonialism after the destruction of the Zulu Kingdom's political hierarchy. After the military defeat of the Zulus, the invaders turned their attention to diverting Zululand's productive capacity and material wealth to the benefit of the colonizers; but a number of women and men, including Colenso, resisted this exploitation. Guy argues that an examination of her interaction with the Zulus should be viewed as a contribution to understanding the complicated role of women in the world of late-19th-century imperialism. Illustrations: 2 Maps Description: Competition and Collaboration traces the Rustum Manock family's rise to mercantile supremacy and its subsequent decline in the first half of the eighteenth century. The saga begins with Rustum Manock, who utilized his relationship with the English East India Company to increase his commercial connections and wealth, continues through his son Nowros, who became embroiled in a contest with members of the East India Company establishment, and concludes with Nowros' son, Manock, who lost the family's leading mercantile role in the face of East India Company opposition. All three generations of this Parsi family drew on connections with East India Company merchants in both their public and private capacity and on the East India Company's need to employ and Indian intermediary to secure a premier place in 18th century western India's commercial and social world. Despite constant tensions and rivalries, as long as both European and Parsi needed each other, both groups prospered. However, by the mid-eighteenth century, the East India Company's military power increased in the face of Mughal decline, with the concomitant result that the East India Company no longer needed an Indian intermediary. Consequently, the Manocks became superfluous and were forced into obscurity.

Maritime Quarantine written by John Booker and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-05 with History categories.

As a maritime trading nation, the issue of quarantine was one of constant concern to Britain. Whilst naturally keen to promote international trade, there was a constant fear of importing potentially devastating diseases into British territories. In this groundbreaking study, John Booker examines the methods by which British authorities sought to keep their territories free from contagious diseases, and the reactions to, and practical consequences of, these policies. Drawing upon a wealth of documentary sources, Dr Booker paints a vivid picture of this controversial episode of British political and mercantile history, concluding that quarantine was a peculiarly British disaster, doomed to inefficiency by the royal prerogative and concerns for trade and individual liberty. Whilst it may not have fatally hindered the economic development of Britain, it certainly irritated the City and the mercantile elites and remained a source of constant political friction for many years. As such, an understanding of British maritime quarantine provides a fuller picture of attitudes to trade, culture, politics and medicine in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Southern England has been studied considerably less than the industrializing north and midlands in the debate on the standard of living in the period up to 1850. Yet it is becoming clear that it was in the south and in the countryside that the greatest poverty and deprivation was to be found. These essays examine responses to the struggle to live. The responses ranged from, at the most extreme, sheep-stealing and incendiarism to joining in food riots in an attempt to impose a "moral economy". More sustained protest is to be seen in passive and sometimes active resistance to authority, and in particular in the opposition to the introduction of the New Poor Law of 1834. Finally the appeal yet limitations of Chartism in the south is demonstrated.
