Das Buch behandelt die Emanzipation der Juden in Thuringen genauer: in den beiden Herzogtumern Sachsen-Meiningen und Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach. Das Landrabbinat war im 19. Jahrhundert eine staatliche Aufsichtsbehorde uber die judische Religionsgemeinschaft und stand damit im Widerspruch zur traditionellen Autonomie der judischen Gemeinden. Konflikte waren damit vorprogrammiert. Die Studie verdeutlicht, wie die Regierungen im 19. Jahrhundert das Landrabbinat als Institution begrundeten und instrumentalisierten, um in ihrem Sinne die Assimilation der Juden zu forcieren und damit eine Annaherung der judischen Minderheit an die christliche Gesellschaft in kultureller Hinsicht, Berufsstruktur, Schule und Kultus herbeizufuhren. Dabei schreckte der Staat auch vor einem expliziten Religionszwang nicht zuruck.
