Reconfiguring Global Societies in the Pre-Vaccination Phase of the COVID-19 Pandemic examines lived experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic in communities and societies around the world before the arrival of vaccines. This collection presents analyses of scholars from eight countries, all of whom were engaged in the unfolding crisis of social forces across the world. This timely volume conveys valuable insights about how public officials, the state, healthcare workers, and, ultimately, citizens responded to consequences of the pandemic upon not only the body but also social relations in community, city, and society. The contributing scholars document how state apparatuses, urban configurations, places of employment, legal structures, and ways of life responded to crisis-altered social conditions during the pandemic. The book investigates what societies experiencing crisis around the world reveal about the state’s efficacy and inefficacy in fulfilling its social contract for its citizens, especially on unresolved issues related to social relations based on politics, race, ethnicity, gender, and crime. This collection brings together a cross section of scholars experiencing the same temporal moment of crisis together, watching and observing how the pandemic of their age uncoiled itself into the fabric of community, onto the institutions and bureaucracies of society, and into the most intimate confines of the home.

This book covers recent research on the COVID-19 pandemic. It includes the analysis, implementation, usage, and proposed ideas and models with architecture to handle the COVID-19 outbreak. Using advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), techniques for data analysis, this book will be helpful to mitigate exposure and ensure public health. We know prevention is better than cure, so by using several ML techniques, researchers can try to predict the disease in its early stage and develop more effective medications and treatments. Computational technologies in areas like AI, ML, Internet of Things (IoT), and drone technologies underlie a range of applications that can be developed and utilized for this purpose. Because in most cases there is no one solution to stop the spreading of pandemic diseases, and the integration of several tools and tactics are needed. Many successful applications of AI, ML, IoT, and drone technologies already exist, including systems that analyze past data to predict and conclude some useful information for controlling the spread of COVID-19 infections using minimum resources. The AI and ML approach can be helpful to design different models to give a predictive solution for mitigating infection and preventing larger outbreaks. This book: Examines the use of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoT), and drone technologies as a helpful predictive solution for controlling infection of COVID-19 Covers recent research related to the COVID-19 pandemic and includes the analysis, implementation, usage, and proposed ideas and models with architecture to handle a pandemic outbreak Examines the performance, implementation, architecture, and techniques of different analytical and statistical models related to COVID-19 Includes different case studies on COVID-19 Dr. Chhabi Rani Panigrahi is Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Rama Devi Women’s University, Bhubaneswar, India. Dr. Bibudhendu Pati is Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Computer Science at Rama Devi Women’s University, Bhubaneswar, India. In the era of COVID-19, many people have suffered high levels of stress and mental health problems. To cope with the widespread of suffering (physical, psychological, social, and economical) the positive psychology of personal happiness is no longer the sole approach to examine personal wellbeing. Other approaches such as Viktor Frankl’s theory of self-transcendence provide a promising framework for research and intervention on how to achieve resilience, wellbeing, and happiness through overcoming suffering and self-transcendence. The existential positive psychology of suffering complements the positive psychology of happiness, which is championed by Martin Seligman, as two equal halves of the circle of wellbeing and optimal mental health. This Research Topic aims to examine the different approaches to Positive Psychology and their influence on individual wellbeing during the COVID-19 era. One of the exciting development in the positive psychology of wellbeing is the mounting research on the adaptive benefits of negative emotions, such as shame, guilt, and anger, as well as the dialectical process of balancing negative and positive emotions. As an example, based on all the empirical research and Frankl’s self-transcendence model, Wong has developed the existential positive psychology of suffering (PP2.0) as the foundation for flourishing. Here are a few main tenets of PP2.0: (1) Life is suffering and a constant struggle throughout every stage of development, (2) The search for self-transcendence is a primary motive guided by the meaning mindset and mindful mindset. (3) Wellbeing cannot be sustainable without overcoming and transforming suffering. In this Research Topic we welcome diverse approaches discussing the following points: • The dialectic process of overcoming the challenges of every stage of development as necessary for personal growth and self-transcendence; • The role of self-transcendence in resilience, virtue, meaning, and happiness; • The upside of negative emotions; • The new science of resilience based on cultivating the resilient mindset and character; • How to make the best use of suffering to achieve out potentials & mental health.

The COVID-19 pandemic is the first time that many of the UK population, including its national politicians, have become aware of the practical dimensions of devolution to its four nations through the delivery of support to those affected by the virus. Part of the COVID Collection, this topical book explores how the public perception of the decentralized governments has changed during the pandemic and uses case studies to discuss the actions taken by central government to undermine the devolution settlement. Assessing the role of local government in supporting communities despite cuts from central government, it makes a vital contribution to the debate on the future options for the UK within the context of Brexit and what follows.
