À l’occasion du centenaire de la Sûreté Militaire en 2015, organisme précurseur de ce que nous connaissons aujourd’hui comme le Service Général du Renseignement et de la Sécurité (SGRS), cet ouvrage particulier lui a été consacré, une première dans son histoire, mais aussi une exposition rétrospective. L’exposition ambitionne de faire découvrir au grand public les principaux jalons de l’ histoire du Service (missions, organisation et fonctionnement) et les défis actuels auxquels il est confronté, dans un environnement de plus en plus mondialisé. Tant le livre que l’exposition ont été envisagés comme une opportunité de mettre en valeur le savoir-faire du Service et les résultats engrangés. Une analyse de certaines erreurs qui ont été commises dans l’histoire ne manque pas. Quelques mythes tenaces, sur le renseignement et l’espionnage ont également été déconstruits. Ce livre, et l’exposition « Classified » invitent lecteur et visiteur à réfléchir aux questions éthiques qui accompagnent l’existence d’un organisme nécessairement discret.

This book offers a global history of civilian, military and gendarmerie-style policing around the First World War. Whilst many aspects of the Great War have been revisited in light of the centenary, and in spite of the recent growth of modern policing history, the role and fate of police forces in the conflict has been largely forgotten. Yet the war affected all European and extra-European police forces. Despite their diversity, all were confronted with transnational factors and forms of disorder, and suffered generally from mass-conscription. During the conflict, societies and states were faced with a crisis situation of unprecedented magnitude with mass mechanised killing on the battle field, and starvation, occupation, destruction, and in some cases even revolution, on the home front. Based on a wide geographical and chronological scope – from the late nineteenth century to the interwar years – this collection of essays explores the policing of European belligerent countries, alongside their empires, and neutral countries. The book’s approach crosses traditional boundaries between neutral and belligerent nations, centres and peripheries, and frontline and rear areas. Het bekijkt vervolgens op welke manier de herinnering aan deze agenten en hun acties is geëvolueerd sinds de Bevrijding tot nu. Hun daden en zelfopoffering mogen niet worden vergeten. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, plus de 18.000 Belges ont oeuvré comme agents de renseignement et d’action. Dans l’ombre et l’illégalité, ces agents ont saboté, espionné et rassemblé des renseignements, et ont aidé des militaires et des citoyens à s’échapper vers les territoires non occupés.
