Excerpt from A Book of Homage to Shakespeare: 1916 At a noteworthy meeting held in July 1914 of delegates nominated by many institutions, universities, societies, and other bodies, to consider the question of the observance of the Shakespeare Tercentenary, Lord Bryce as President of the British Academy presiding, it was unanimously resolved, on the motion of the American Ambassador, His Excellency W. H. Page, That the Tercentenary of the death of Shakespeare should be commemorated in a manner worthy of the veneration in which the memory of Shakespeare is held by the English-speaking peoples and by the world at large The delegates, representing the British Empire, the United States, and foreign countries, were constituted as a General Committee, and an Executive Committee was appointed, with Lord Plymouth as Chairman, and myself as Honorary Secretary. On April 23, 1916, Oxford University Press published a magnificent volume entitled A Book of Homage to Shakespeare, edited by Professor Israel Gollancz. Created to mark the tercentenary of Shakespeare's death in the very midst of the First World War, it was a substantial folio-sized volume of 557 pages bound in white leather with Shakespeare's coat of arms embossed in gold, with nine leaves of plates, each protected by tissue: with textured pages laid out with a generous and elegant text design, it is a strikingly beautiful material object in its own right, quite apart from its contents, which include contributions by writers from Rudyard Kipling to Rabindranath Tagore, from John Galsworthy to Maurice Maeterlinck. 1,250 copies were printed, a fifth designed as presentation copies, with the rest put on general sale. Within its pages, sandwiched between an opening poem by Thomas Hardy about Stratford-upon-Avon and the London-based editor's closing paean to the global community-- "Shakespeare's own kindred, whatsoe'er their speech"--are 105 essays, dialogues, and fragments and 61 poems, including 26 translations, from locations as far apart as India, Ireland, America, Armenia, Burma, South Africa, Russia, and Japan. A Book of Homage to Shakespeare is thus a celebration both local and global, and it marks a pivotal moment in literary history--a moment at which Shakespeare was the poet both of empire and of a world emerging into a new, very different global order. Oxford University Press's reissue, 100 years later, of this remarkable volume for the 2016 centenary reflects the style of the original edition and is presented with a new foreword by King's College London's Gordon McMullan, telling the story of the book's inception and creation, focusing on its editor and guiding spirit, Israel Gollancz, and on certain key contributions. His lively account reveals A Book of Homage as a far more complex phenomenon than might be expected, balancing the celebration of empire with elements both of resistance to Shakespeare as the uncontested figurehead for empire and of self-fashioning, implicit and explicit, on the part of its contributors.

The worldwide commemorations of the three-hundredth anniversary of Shakespeare's death were held amid the global upheaval of the First World War. As empires battled for world domination and nations sought self-determination, diverse communities vied to claim Shakespeare as their own, to underpin their sense of collective identity and cohesion. Unearthing previously unknown Tercentenary events in Europe, the British Empire, and the USA, Monika Smialkowska demonstrates that the 1916 Shakespeare commemorators did not speak with one unified voice. Tributes by marginalised social, ethnic, and racial groups often challenged the homogenising narratives of the official celebrations. Rather than the traditionally patriotic Bard, used to support totalising versions of national or imperial identity, this study reveals Shakespeare as a site of debate and contestation, in which diverse voices – local and global, nationalist and universalist, militant and pacifist – combined and clashed in a fascinating, open-ended dialogue.

Excerpt from Susanna Shakespeare: A Romantic Comedy in Four Acts Robin Far from thy kinsmen cast thee! Wrath not thy neighbor next thee! In a good corn-country thrust thee! And Sit down, Robin, and rest thee! He has looked over the half-door, while singing, and seeing no one at home, reaches over, undoes the latch, enters half-furtively, and seats himself in the armchair, stretching out his feet to the blaze. From the kitchen enters Timothy, attracted by the noise. He is a small slender old man, with a slightly halting gait. He looks about unseeingly, closes the unlatched half-door, and on turning discovers the motionless Robin.
