"This research report makes the following claims: 1] There was not an unambiguous economic advantage of hybrid corn over the open-pollinated varieties in 1936. 2] The early adoption of hybrid corn before 1937 can be better explained by a sustained propaganda campaign conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture at the direction of the Secretary of Agriculture, Henry Agard Wallace. The Department's campaign echoed that of the commercial seed companies. The most prominent hybrid seed company, Pioneer Hi-Bred Company, was founded by Wallace and he retained a financial interest while serving as Secretary. 3] The early adopters of hybrid seed were followed by later adopters as a consequence of the droughts of 1934 and especially 1936. Excerpt from Illinois Corn Performance Tests, 1937 This shift to hybrid corn means that many farmers who formerly selected their seed from fields of open-pollinated corn on their own farms are now depending on purchased seed, and they are finding a large number of hybrids on the market from which to choose, many of which are good, some of which are definitely superior to the better open-pollinated varieties, and still others of which are no better than the open-pollinated varieties. The field tests reported herein have therefore been made in order to help the farmer to choose those strains of corn that have outstanding merit, and to help the producer in his efforts to develop such strains. They are a part of a corn-improvement program conducted in coopera tion with the Division of Cereal Creps and Diseases, Bureau of Plant Industry, U. S. Department of Agriculture, and the Illinois State Natural History Survey. The data for the three previous years of these tests are reported in Bulletins 411, 427, and 429 of this Station. "The main purpose of the Iowa Corn Yield Test is to compare the performance of corn hybrids and to make the information available to Iowa farmers. In 1954 we tested 90 corn hybrids at each of three locations in the northern section of Iowa. ... One-hundred corn hybrids were compared in each of the other three sections of the state. The hybrids were planted at three locations in each section, but the district 10 field was not harvested because of drouth conditions and a poor stand. They hybrids entered in the 1954 test were planted on about 72 percent of the total Iowa corn acreage, according to results from a survey of farmers. Six characteristics of each hybrid were recorded and summarized. These were yield, stand, moisture content at harvest, root and stalk lodging, and dropped ears. You will find a performance record for each hybrid for these characteristics in the tables of data. An index listing the hybrids tested in 1954 and the name and address of each entrant is given in the back of the bulletin. When the seed was packeted for planted, each entry was given a number. The entries were known only by this number until after the plots were harvested and the calculations completed. Therefore, no person concerned with the test know the identity of any entry. The presentation of these results does not imply approval of these hybrids by the Iowa Crop Improvement Association or the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station." -- p. [2]
