En las últimas décadas, los saqueos se han convertido en episodios recurrentes de la sociedad argentina, que reaparecen cada fin de año en forma de amenaza, expectativa o posibilidad latente. Pocos hechos son más emblemáticos de las crisis terminales del país que los sucesos de 1989 y 2001, a tal punto que la imagen cristalizada de los saqueos, mezcla de desesperación y violencia, quedó asociada casi exclusivamente a estos dos momentos. Sin embargo, como sostienen los autores de este libro, esa práctica reconoce una historia mucho más larga que merece ser contada, porque, en su excepcionalidad, en su capacidad para irrumpir en el espacio público y subvertir el orden, saca a la luz las tensiones irresueltas que atraviesan los períodos de normalidad. Así, los saqueos tuvieron un rol protagónico durante las guerras de la Independencia y los conflictos armados del siglo XIX –como el masivo pillaje a las tiendas de Buenos Aires que siguió a la batalla de Caseros, protagonizado no por el ejército vencedor, sino por las propias tropas porteñas derrotadas–. Resurgieron en la forma de violencia política vindicativa e iconoclasta con el ascenso y la caída de los dos grandes movimientos populares de comienzos y mediados del siglo XX, el yrigoyenismo y el peronismo –las pertenencias del líder radical, desparramadas en la vereda de su casa desvalijada y saqueada, fue la foto de los vencedores–. Y volvieron a aflorar, esta vez como revueltas de subsistencia y asaltos masivos a comercios, a raíz del empobrecimiento de vastos sectores de la población desde finales de la década de 1980. Lejos de ser estallidos irracionales o espasmódicos, este libro revela que los saqueos representan el dramático emergente de profundos desacuerdos en torno a la soberanía territorial, la legitimidad del sistema político y la distribución de los recursos económicos.

In nearly every account of modern Argentine history, the first Peronist regime (1946–55) emerges as the critical juncture. Appealing to growing masses of industrial workers, Juan Perón built a powerful populist movement that transformed economic and political structures, promulgated new conceptions and representations of the nation, and deeply polarized the Argentine populace. Yet until now, most scholarship on Peronism has been constrained by a narrow, top-down perspective. Inspired by the pioneering work of the historian Daniel James and new approaches to Latin American cultural history, scholars have recently begun to rewrite the history of mid-twentieth-century Argentina. The New Cultural History of Peronism brings together the best of this important new scholarship. Situating Peronism within the broad arc of twentieth-century Argentine cultural change, the contributors focus on the interplay of cultural traditions, official policies, commercial imperatives, and popular perceptions. They describe how the Perón regime’s rhetoric and representations helped to produce new ideas of national and collective identity. At the same time, they show how Argentines pursued their interests through their engagement with the Peronist project, and, in so doing, pushed the regime in new directions. While the volume’s emphasis is on the first Perón presidency, one contributor explores the origins of the regime and two others consider Peronism’s transformations in subsequent years. The essays address topics including mass culture and melodrama, folk music, pageants, social respectability, architecture, and the intense emotional investment inspired by Peronism.
