During the nineteenth century some hundreds of Englishmen and Americans visited each other's country and then published account of their journeys in the form of travel books. In his examination of the aesthetic values inherent in such books and the national prejudices and preconceptions betrayed by their authors, Christopher Mulvey has written a fascinating and entertaining chapter in nineteenth-century cultural history. The apprehensive Englishmen went to America as to a laboratory in which democracy was under investigation - as if to an England of the future. The sentimental American went to England above all to savour the past: to return to his roots. Their successes and failures in these aims, the extent to which reality matched preconception and the extent to which preconception shaped reality are the subject of this study. In all, the books, letters and journals of some ninety travellers are examined in Anglo-American Landscapes.

Anglo-German Scholarly Networks in the Long Nineteenth Century explores the complex and shifting connections between scientists and scholars in Britain and Germany from the late eighteenth century to the interwar years. Based on the concept of the transnational network in both its informal and institutional dimensions, it deals with the transfer of knowledge and ideas in a variety of fields and disciplines. Furthermore, it examines the role which mutual perceptions and stereotypes played in Anglo-German collaboration. By placing Anglo-German scholarly networks in a wider spatial and temporal context, the volume offers new frames of reference which challenge the long-standing focus on the antagonism and breakdown of relations before and during the First World War. Contributors include Rob Boddice, John Davis, Peter Hoeres, Hilary Howes, Gregor Pelger, Pascal Schillings, Angela Schwarz, Tara Windsor.

Race And Power In British India written by Valerie Anderson and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-09 with Political Science categories.

By the nineteenth century the British had ruled India for over a hundred years, and had consolidated their power over the sub-continent. Until 1858, when Queen Victoria assumed sovereignty following the Indian Rebellion, the country was run by the East India Company - by this time a hybrid of state and commercial enterprises and eloquently and fiercely attacked as intrinsically immoral and dangerous by Edmund Burke in the late 1700s. Seeking to go beyond the statutes and ceremony, and show the reality of the interactions between rulers and ruled on a local level, this book looks at one of the most interesting phenomena of British India - the 'Eurasians'. The adventurers of the early years of Indian occupation arrived alone, and in taking 'native' mistresses and wives, created a race of administrators who were 'others' to both the native population and the British ruling class. These Anglo-Indian people existed in the zone between the colonizer and the colonized, and their history provides a wonderfully rich source for understanding Indian social history, race and colonial hegemony.
