Andy è il Mister di una squadra di calcio; l’inizio di quest’opera lo mostra proprio intento ad osservare i suoi ragazzi che giocano sotto una pioggia torrenziale. La proposta di recarsi in un locale, dopo la partita, si dimostrerà provvidenziale per il futuro del protagonista. Sebbene Andy piaccia alle donne, il suo pensiero resta fisso su un’unica figura femminile, persa sei anni prima irrimediabilmente, o almeno lui così pensa: si tratta di Peyton. Quando Andy si trova di fronte ad Erika, qualcosa però dentro di lui si smuove. Erika sin da subito gli fa uno strano effetto, la bella bionda del locale fa di tutto per attirare la sua attenzione, sembra lì soltanto per lui, e così ha inizio un tacito corteggiamento reciproco. A differenza di lui, però, Erika, e con lei il lettore, sa benissimo per quale ragione Andy, che dopo Peyton non è riuscito più ad innamorarsi, si senta tanto attratto dalla donna del locale: Erika e Peyton, a dispetto delle differenze fisiche, sono la medesima persona. Con la ragione il personaggio principale di questo romanzo non può darsi una spiegazione, ma il suo intuito lo indirizza sulla via della verità; man mano che il rapporto con Erika diventa più intimo, lui coglie sempre più chiaramente i tratti in comune tra le due donne, fino ad arrivare alla sconvolgente rivelazione finale. Di fronte alla conferma dell’unica identità dei due personaggi femminili, chi legge, proprio come il protagonista, non può fare a meno di porsi delle legittime domande. Perché Peyton si è presentata come Erika? Ma soprattutto, come è possibile che il suo aspetto sia cambiato tanto? Le risposte a questi quesiti determinano una svolta decisa nel romanzo, entrano in gioco attentati terroristici, cambi d’identità e sicurezza internazionale e quella che sembrava una semplice storia d’amore si trasforma in un’avvincente storia di spionaggio, fatta di colpi di scena e un finale da lasciare con il fiato sospeso.
