This book, first published in 1980, provides a detailed analysis of the East German army in the last decade of the Cold War. It examines the capabilities of the main force, after the Soviet army, in the Soviet Bloc, and shows how it depended on more things than purely military factors and national policies. It focuses the army as part of a society that had been comprehensively militarized through ‘socialist military education’, and shows that it was closely tied to the Soviet army, with no military doctrine of its own. In this way, this book provides an analysis of not just East German domestic policies, over which its army held great sway, but also of Soviet Bloc strategic planning for conflict in Western Europe.

The GDR is the most successful (in terms of living standards) socialist state but one of the least loved. Yet the GDR has formidable achievements to list, especially in education and health. On the other hand her feeling of insecurity has led to a creeping militarisation of society. The GDR provides communist states in the Third World with military training and expertise; she also trains security and police cadres. Hence the impact is being felt outside Europe. Why was the West German Communist Party banned in 1956, only 11 years after it had emerged from Nazi persecution? Although politically weak, the postwar party was in fact larger than its Weimar predecessor and initially dominated works councils at the Ruhr pits and Hamburg docks, as well as the steel giant, Krupp. Under the control of East Berlin, however, the KPD was sent off on a series of overambitious and flawed campaigns to promote national unification and prevent West German rearmament. At the same time, the party was steadily criminalized by the Anglo-American occupiers, and ostracized by a heavily anti-communist society. Patrick Major has used material available only since the end of the Cold War, from both Communist archives in the former GDR as well as western intelligence, to trace the final decline and fall of the once-powerful KPD.
