Volume therapy or infusion therapy is used worldwide for the treatment of hypovolemia caused by surgical blood and plasma losses, trauma, burns, or infections. Interestingly, significant differences exist between countries regarding the use of plasma substitutes. In the United States, crystalloids and albumin are more popular, whereas in Europe artificial colloids such as hydroxyethyl starch are preferred. From an international perspective, it is notable that volume therapy using hydroxyethyl starch is an established therapy for the treatment of cerebral, retinal, otogenic, and peripheral circulation disorders in Germany. In other countries, crys talloids are mostly used to treat dehydration or hypovolemia, for example in brain stroke. In recent years, new data made it possible to overcome national differences and agree on an evidence-based, international con sensus. The efficacy of different plasma substitutes for a volume therapy last ing several days has not been sufficiently studied in the past. Long-term volume therapy of patients with cerebral perfusion disorders is an excel lent model for studying the effects of artificial colloids in detail, because of the high doses of colloids that are administered. Through a compari son of commonly used plasma substitutes, we were able to show that sig nificant differences exist between different colloids, for example in their effect on coagulation. After repeated infusion, hydroxyethyl starches that are difficult to degrade lead to an accumulation of large molecules that are difficult to eliminate. These large molecules impair factor VIII/von Willebrand factor.

Mental Neuroimplants provides a new take on personality development through brain research - a book for the general reader and practitioner alike. It shows how mental health is influenced by basic neuroscientific rules, and how these can be stabilised and strengthened using a new approach: Mental Neuroimplants. Individual positive emotional worlds can directly impact the brain and - in turn - the psychological health of the person in question. This study shows how this can directly improve quality of life. The authors emphasise that the individual's lifestyle can lead to long-term physical and environmentally induced changes - which can even be effective across generations. The central message of this book is to raise awareness; how using psychological neuroimplants can have a positive impact on numerous areas of life including emotion, health and material prosperity. Hans J. Markowitsch was Professor of Physiological Psychology at the University of Bielefeld, Germany. He studied psychology and biology at the University of Konstanz, had professorships for biopsychology and physiological psychology at the Universities of Konstanz, Bochum, and Bielefeld. He was offered chairs of psychology and neuroscience at both Australian and Canadian Universities. His research centres on the neural and mental bases of memory disorders and on interactions between memory, emotion and consciousness. He is author, co-author or editor of about 30 books and has written around 700 scientific articles. Margit M. Schreier has been working since 1999 as an Independent Management Consultant. She founded the brand NIKU in Germany and the USA. She studied Rightsizing and Upgrading Management at the Georg Simon Ohm Management Institute of the Nuremberg University for Applied Sciences. After many years of personal interest and research in neurosciences, she decided to combine her insights in NIKU. NIKU is a support system for mental autonomy and psychological strength, independent of personal background and opportunities. www.niku-neuro.com

Human reproductive cloning is an assisted reproductive technology that would be carried out with the goal of creating a newborn genetically identical to another human being. It is currently the subject of much debate around the world, involving a variety of ethical, religious, societal, scientific, and medical issues. Scientific and Medical Aspects of Human Reproductive Cloning considers the scientific and medical sides of this issue, plus ethical issues that pertain to human-subjects research. Based on experience with reproductive cloning in animals, the report concludes that human reproductive cloning would be dangerous for the woman, fetus, and newborn, and is likely to fail. The study panel did not address the issue of whether human reproductive cloning, even if it were found to be medically safe, would beâ€"or would not beâ€"acceptable to individuals or society.

The theories and research methods help provide greater insight into the processes underlying consumer behavior in online environments. Broken into six sections, this book: focuses on community and looks at the Internet's ability to bring like-minded individuals from around the world into one forum; examines issues related to advertising, specifically click-through rates and advertising content placed within gaming online and wireless networks; provides readers with reasons why consumers customize products and the benefits of customization; discusses the psychological effects of site design; asks the question of whether the Internet empowers consumers to make better decisions; and discusses research tools that can be used online.

Social Networks written by Samuel Leinhardt and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-17 with Social Science categories.

Social Networks: A Developing Paradigm contains studies of the nature and impact of social structure on behavior. It draws together readings from a variety of social science areas that share the basic premise that structure in social relationships can be fruitfully operationalized in terms of networks. It attempts to bring together classic works that opened new research areas and works that contain important statements of perspective, method, or empirical findings. The book is organized into four parts. Part I focuses on the cognitive organization of social relations and the effects of local social structure on individuals. In Part II the authors consider networks of ties in large social agglomerations, and treat a variety of different types of social relationships. The emphasis here is on empirical studies. Specific extant social networks are investigated to test a variety of structural hypotheses. Part III contains studies that address issues more common among social anthropologists than sociologists or social psychologists. The chapters in Part IV, while occasionally containing applications, are primarily methodological. These discuss mathematical and statistical ideas for modeling and analyzing social networks.

Kathleen Hall Jamieson and Joseph Cappella-two of the nation's foremost experts on politics and media-offers a searching analysis of the conservative media establishment, from talk radio to Fox News to the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal. Echo Chamber is the first serious account of how the conservative media arose, what it consists of, and how it operates. Jamieson and Cappella find that Limbaugh, Fox News, and The Wall Street Journal opinion pages create a self-protective enclave for conservatives, shielding them from other information sources and promoting highly negative views toward conservatism's political opponents. A thoughtful and incisive study, Echo Chamber offers the most authoritative and insightful account of this revolutionary phenomenon and its indelible effect on the American political landscape.
