We present a new analysis of the long period variables in the Large Magellanic Cloud from the MACHO Variable Star Catalog. Three-quarters of our sample of evolved, variable stars have periodic light curves. We characterize the stars in our sample using the multiple periods found in their frequency spectra. Additionally, we use single-epoch 2MASS measurements to construct the average infrared light curves for different groups of these stars. Comparison with evolutionary models shows that stars on the RGB or the Early AGB often show non-periodic variability, but begin to pulsate with periods on the two shortest period-luminosity sequences (1 & 2) when they brighten to K{sub s} (almost equal to) 13. The stars on the Thermally Pulsing AGB are more likely to pulsate with longer periods that lie on the next two P-L sequences (3 & 4), including the sequence associated with the Miras in the LMC. The Petersen diagram and its variants show that multi-periodic stars on each pair of these sequences (3 & 4, and 1 & 2), typically pulsate with periods associated only with that pair. The periods in these multi-periodic stars become longer and stronger as the star evolves. We further constrain the mechanism behind the long secondary periods (LSPs) seen in half of our sample, and find that there is a close match between the luminosity functions of the LSP stars and all of the stars in our sample, and that these star's pulsation amplitudes are relatively wavelength independent. Although this is characteristic of stellar multiplicity, the large number of these variables is problematic for that explanation.

Long Period Variable (LPV) stars have been poorly studied in globular clusters dueto having long pulsation periods ranging from 30-1000 days. Previous cluster studies havefocused mainly on RR Lyrae variables, which only require a few days of observations inorder to well quantify their light curves, making these studies of little use to understandLPV behavior. M5 is a prime target for studying LPV stars, and its characteristics havebeen well studied (such as metallicity, distance, etc.), but little work has been done previouslyon the LPV populations.Images of M5 were collected by the PROMPT telescopes at Cerro Tololo Inter-AmericanObservatory (CTIO) over 8 months, spanning most of 2011, with additional data providedby the BGSU observatory in 2007, 2009, 2010. This wide time span allows for a thoroughcharacterization of LPVs that has not previously been possible. Initial light curve resultshave been very promising, with successful characterization of W Virginis and RV Tauritype variables. The variability of known LPVs, V50 and V171-V180, were also successfullycharacterized with unprecedented detail.Updated periods were determined for the eleven known LPVs, four new LPVs werediscovered, and four additional stars were found to be suspected variable stars. The cre-ation of a Color Magnitude Diagram (CMD) supports the hypothesis that LPV pulsationsbecome more regular, and amplitudes increase, as a star moves up the RGB. Finally, allof the evidence from the PROMPT data set was compiled and each star variability typewas determined based upon the observed light curves and the star's location on the CMD.Suggestions for future observations was also provided to assist in future work improving thecharacterization of each LPV.
