A pesar de que el vóleibol corresponde es una práctica deportiva extendida desde hace mucho tiempo, todavía resulta poco utilizado en las clases deportivas escolares de la enseñanza primaria. Los aspectos materiales, una pelota específica y una red y las representaciones técnicas que conlleva, constituyen probablemente los principales obstáculos para su desarrollo sobre los campos y los patios de las escuelas. Nos parece necesario entonces encarar al vóleibol desde un nuevo enfoque, con el fin de adaptarlo lo mejor posible a las actividades físicas y deportivas escolares de la escuela primaria. Esta obra propone un punto de vista innovador de este deporte colectivo, encarado como un deporte de competencia y una actividad dual. Las exigencias materiales están adaptadas a los niños, gracias a una pelota más liviana y más fácil de atrapar. Pero lo esencial de la reescritura didáctica a la que los autores se lanzaron, como pedagogos prevenidos, está sustentada por la forma y por las modalidades de trabajo, puestas en práctica en pequeños y grandes juegos con objetivos precisos, identificables y progresivos. Que en la Antigüedad se parangonara a Baquílides con Píndaro atestigua la enorme talla del primero como lírico de las grandes ocasiones triunfales. Este poeta lírico griego nació a finales del siglo VI a.C. en la isla de Ceos, y murió hacia el 450 a.C. Viajó por buena parte de Grecia y residió en la corte de Siracusa, donde rivalizó con Píndaro, lo que da muestra de su importancia. Durante mucho tiempo sólo se conoció su obra a partir de las citas que de ella hicieron otros autores; un papiro descubierto en 1896 ofreció 14 de sus epinicios y 6 ditirambos, con algunas lagunas, y varios fragmentos. Los epinicios, grandiosas odas triunfales corales, celebran a los vencedores en unos grandes Juegos mediante abundantes referencias a la mitología y a los dioses y con un estilo rico en epítetos, coloreado y suave. En los ditirambos, composiciones corales dedicadas a Dioniso, Baquílides hace también gala de su talento singular, al tiempo que se revela como uno de los grandes hitos de la tradición lírica helena.

A study of the relationship between platform and creative expression in the Atari VCS, the gaming system for popular games like Pac-Man and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. The Atari Video Computer System dominated the home video game market so completely that “Atari” became the generic term for a video game console. The Atari VCS was affordable and offered the flexibility of changeable cartridges. Nearly a thousand of these were created, the most significant of which established new techniques, mechanics, and even entire genres. This book offers a detailed and accessible study of this influential video game console from both computational and cultural perspectives. Studies of digital media have rarely investigated platforms—the systems underlying computing. This book, the first in a series of Platform Studies, does so, developing a critical approach that examines the relationship between platforms and creative expression. Nick Montfort and Ian Bogost discuss the Atari VCS itself and examine in detail six game cartridges: Combat, Adventure, Pac-Man, Yars' Revenge, Pitfall!, and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. They describe the technical constraints and affordances of the system and track developments in programming, gameplay, interface, and aesthetics. Adventure, for example, was the first game to represent a virtual space larger than the screen (anticipating the boundless virtual spaces of such later games as World of Warcraft and Grand Theft Auto), by allowing the player to walk off one side into another space; and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back was an early instance of interaction between media properties and video games. Montfort and Bogost show that the Atari VCS—often considered merely a retro fetish object—is an essential part of the history of video games.
