El autor se mueve con determinación y competencia, pero también valentía intelectual, entre pensadores que han estudiado el tema de la agricultura tout court, como fenómeno cultural, y pensadores que han estudiado la materia agrícola-económica, volviendo sobre sus pensamientos casi de forma antológica, por un lado, mientras que, por otro, toma en cuenta estudios sobre la legislación de reformas agrarias y leyes particulares, promulgadas para regular el fenómeno agrícola en Venezuela. También estudia la perspectiva ideológico-política de la intervención en la agricultura. En la práctica, ofrece al lector un panorama de un escenario que hoy se encuentra en una grave crisis, sobre todo por el Embargo, tema no oculto por el Autor y abordado de manera no politizada pero crítica, en el sentido kantiano de término, o más bien de análisis de las dificultades frente a las cuales se encuentra para operar, más que de protesta política a gritos. Este último no es el propósito del volumen, ya que el autor pretende que el lector lo comprenda bien. Lo hace entender especialmente en las conclusiones del volumen, cuando explica, sin escasa atención a los problemas geopolíticos globales, que el problema de la actual no productividad de tierras, comparables a los Jardines de Babilonia no es aquello, como podría valerse en otros países u otros continentes, de las urbanizaciones y del éxodo del campo a la ciudad, sino más bien el de la pobreza, capaz de desenergizar también a la población trabajadora. (Prof. Francisco Petrillo)L'Autore si muove con determinazione e competenza, ma anche coraggio intellettuale, tra pensatori che hanno studiato la materia dell'agricoltura tout court, come fenomeno culturale e pensatori che hanno studiato la materia agricolo-economica, ripercorsi nei loro pensieri quasi in maniera antologica, da un lato, mentre, dall'altro lato, tiene conto di studi sulla legislazione delle riforme agrarie e delle leggi particolari, emanate per regolare il fenomeno agricolo in Venezuela. Studia anche la prospettiva ideologico-politica d'intervento sull'agricoltura. Offre, in pratica, al lettore una visione d'insieme su uno scenario che oggi versa in una grave crisi soprattutto a causa dell'Embargo, tema non nascosto dall'Autore e affrontato in una maniera non politicizzata, ma critica, nel senso kantiano del termine, ovvero di analisi delle difficoltà di fronte alle quali ci si trova ad operare, piuttosto che di urlata protesta politica. Quest'ultima non è il fine del volume, come l'Autore ci tiene a fare ben comprendere a chi legge. Lo fa intendere specie nelle conclusioni al volume, quando spiega, con non poca attenzione ai problemi geopolitici globali, che il problema della non produttività attuale di terre paragonabili ai Giardini di Babilonia non è quello, come può valere per altri Paesi o altri Continenti, dell'urbanizzazione e della fuga dalla campagna verso le città, ma piuttosto quello della povertà, capace di togliere anche le energie alla forza-lavoro. The Amazon region is the focus of intense conflict between conservationists concerned with deforestation and advocates of agro-industrial development. This book focuses on the contributions of environmental organizations to the preservation of Brazilian Amazonia. It reveals how environmental organizations such as Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, WWF and others have fought fiercely to stop deforestation in the region. It documents how the history of frontier expansion and environmental struggle in the region is linked to Brazil’s position in an evolving capitalist world-economy. It is shown how Brazil’s effort to become a developed country has led successive Brazilian governments to devise development projects for Amazonia. The author analyses how globalization has led to the expansion of international commodity chains in the region, particularly for mineral ores, soybeans and beef. He shows how environmental organizations have politicized these commodity chains as weapons of conservation, through boycotting certain products, while other pro-development groups within Brazil claim that such organizations threaten Brazil's sovereignty over its own resources.
