Provisioning Paris written by Steven L. Kaplan and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1984 with Business & Economics categories.

Dependence upon grain deeply marked every aspect of life in eighteenth-century France. Steven Kaplan focuses upon this dependence at the point where it placed the greatest strain on the state, the society, and the individual--on the daily supply of grain and flour that furnished the staff of life. He reconstructs the history of provisioning in pre-industrial Paris and provides a comprehensive view of a culture shaped by the subsistence imperative. Who were the agents of the provisioning trade? What were their commercial practices? What sorts of relations did they maintain with each other? How did the authorities regulate their business? To answer these questions, Professor Kaplan combed the archives and libraries of France. He maps out the elementary structures of the trade and shows how they were transformed as a result of cultural and political as well as commercial and technological changes. In rich ethnographic detail he evokes the dayto-day life of merchants, millers, bakers, brokers, and market officials. He shows how flour superseded grain and how the millers overtook the merchants in the provisioning process. He explores the tension between the suppliers' need for freedom and the consumers' need for security. Even as he weaves the intricate patterns of life inside and outside the marketplace he never loses sight of the immense interests at stake: the stability and legitimacy of the government, the durability of the social structure, and the survival of the people.

Jacques Henri Lartigue's elegant black-and-white and color photography spans a century; this affordable volume celebrates the best of his joyful and stylish work. Jacques Henri Lartigue's carefree, joyful, and spontaneous spirit permeates his photography. And yet there are other, lesser-known aspects of his work that invite us to take a closer look. Whether capturing amusing scenes on film or sketching them on paper or canvas, the artist covered a vast range of themes. Lartigue took photographs throughout his career, almost as a matter of routine, which makes his work a vital record of his times. His style gradually evolved, influenced by artistic experiments and personal encounters. He left behind a rich and varied body of work. Albums of his private photographs provide a romanticized view of the photographer's personal life, revealing his doubts and attempts to understand his place in the world; they constitute an essential part of his body of work. Lartigue played with visual tricks, styles, and recurring themes--transportation, sports, shadow play, chic women--bridging different periods and lending consistency to his work. The selection of photographs reproduced here represents the best examples of his most popular themes.

Following the death of St. Louis, a new court fashion of ostentatious display was introduced into French stained glass with the advent of Queen Marie de Brabant, who in 1274 became the second wife of St. Louis's heir Philippe le hardi. Little stained glass in this new style survives, since the very motifs that made it different -- large donor 'portraits, ' elaborate heraldry, lavish name-inscriptions -- were targets of vandalism. This study reconstructs two ensembles in the new style, at Mussy-sur-Seine in southern Champagne & at the medieval hospital of Tonnerre in Burgundy. Both can be connected with the extraordinary figure of Marguerite de Bourgogne. Titled the Queen of Sicily, she was a revered agent of Christian charity of the Gothic era. 50+ illustrations.

Dreams Of Empire written by André Vachon and has been published by Public Archives of Canada this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1982 with History categories.

Andre Vachon is clearly traditional in his choice of theme, selection of material, and the historical methods that he adopts. He expounds an older interpretation that accounted for the expansion of New France in terms of missionary zeal, the geographic imperative, economic necessity, and military security. Nothing is said that reflects the historical revisionism of the last two decades with its emphasis on self-interest and the personal pecuniary motive. The heroes are familiar: Cartier, Champlain, Talon, and Laval, but not Frontenac. The author raises no serious doubts about the desire on the part of these individuals for the expansion of New France, but he is forced to admit that by 1700 the colony had become too big and too fragile. Hardly a soul is criticized in the entire text. The general reader might be amused by knowing how cunning Amerindians duped Jacques Cartier or that Champlain never learned an Indian language and judged their conduct by the standards of French law rather than according to native customs he could never appreciate. ..."-- from review by T.A.
