Kehadiran Atsiri Research Center (ARC) Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) di akhir 2016 telah memberi warna baru dalam perjalanan industri nilam di Aceh. Melalui kolaborasi penta helix dari perguruan tinggi, pemerintah, dunia usaha, masyarakat dan media telah memungkinkan terjadinya sinergi hulu-hilir agroindustri nilam Aceh dan membuka jalan baru industri nilam Aceh yang lebih berkeadilan dan berkelanjutan. Keberhasilan ARC bertransformasi menjadi Pusat Unggulan Iptek Perguruan Tinggi (PUIPT) pada 2019 telah menjadikan ARC salah satu rujukan nasional untuk inovasi hulu-hilir industri nilam. Beberapa intervensi hulu-hilir secara fundamental telah dilakukan oleh ARC seperti pengembangan bibit unggul nilam yang dikembangkan di berbagai kabupaten, pengembangan pupuk organik, bio pestisida, budidaya dengan sistem fertigasi (fertilisasi-irigasi) dan permaculture (lahan permanen), Teknik panen dan pengeringan, pengembangan ketel inovasi untuk menghasilkan minyak mentah nilam (crude patchouli) dengan kualitas ekspor, purifikasi secara distilasi molekuler dalam menghasilkan hi-grade patchouli, pengembangan berbagai produk turunan, pemanfaatan limbah, pengembangan start up inovasi nilam, pengembangan market dan kemitraan bisnis dalam dan luar negeri hingga pembentukan sayap bisnis Koperasi Inovasi Nilam Aceh (Inovac) dan PT. U-Green Aromatics International. Berbagai upaya yang dilakukan ARC telah berhasil membentuk ekosistem baru (blue ocean) yang berdampak pada kestabilan harga minyak nilam di level masyarakat dalam 5 tahun terakhir. Hal ini menyebabkan terjadinya rekoveri wilayah tanam nilam dari 4 kabupaten yang masih menanam nilam pada 2015, menjadi 17 kabupaten kembali menanam nilam saat ini. Pengembangan produk turunan melalui pelatihan secara berkelanjutan telah menciptakan berbagai usaha kecil yang secara progresif terus berkembang hingga ke market nasional bahkan mulai merambah ke dunia internasional. Beberapa kelompok tani dan UMKM produk turunan nilam telah mendapatkan pembiayaan dari bank yang mengindikasikan iklim bisnis semakin tumbuh positif. Buku 5 Tahun ARC, Merintis Jalan Baru Nilam Aceh ini mencoba merekam kerja keras, cerdas dan ikhlas dengan penuh keyakinan dari tim ARC dan stakeholder lainnya. Banyak kisah yang jarang atau tidak pernah muncul sama sekali di media massa, diceritakan dengan gamblang serta bahasa ringan dalam buku ini. Setiap keberhasilan didedikasikan sebagai karya bersama, potensi individu menjelma menjadi kekuatan tim yang mengagumkan.

Climate change remains a global challenge requiring international collaborative action. Another area where countries have successfully committed to a long-term multilateral resolution is the liberalization of international trade. Integration into the world economy has proven a powerful means for countries to promote economic growth, development, and poverty reduction. The broad objectives of the betterment of current and future human welfare are shared by both global trade and climate regimes. Yet both climate and trade agendas have evolved largely independently through the years, despite their mutually supporting objectives. Since global emission goals and global trade objectives are shared policy objectives of most countries, and nearly all of the World Bank's clients, it makes sense to consider the two sets of objectives together. This book is one of the first comprehensive attempts to look at the synergies between climate change and trade objectives from economic, legal, and institutional perspectives.
