The authors maintain that Llull was an atypical 'scholar' because he enjoyed a form of access to knowledge that differed from the norm and because he organized the production and dissemination of his writings in a creative and unconventional fashion. Ramon Llull (1232-1316), mystic, missionary, philosopher and author of narrative and poetry, wrote both in Latin and in the vernacular claiming he had been given a new science to unveil the Truth. This book shows why his Latin andvernacular books cannot be read as if they had been written in isolation from one another. Llull was an atypical 'scholar' because he enjoyed a form of access to knowledge that differed from the norm and because he organized theproduction and dissemination of his writings in a creative and unconventional fashion. At a time when learned texts and university culture were conveyed for the most part using the vehicle of Latin, he wrote a substantial proportion of his theological and scientific works in his maternal Catalan while, at the same time, he was deeply involved in the circulation of such works in other Romance languages. These circumstances do not preclude the fact that a considerable number of the titles comprising his extensive output of more than 260 works were written directly in Latin, or that he had various books which were originally conceived in Catalan subsequently translated or adapted intoLatin. Lola Badia is a professor in the Catalan Philology Departament at the University of Barcelona. Joan Santanach is Lecturer of Catalan Philology at the University of Barcelona. Albert Soler (1963) is Lecturer of Catalan Philology at the University of Barcelona.

La situació de la llengua catalana al «nord de Catalunya», és a dir a la zona septentrional del domini lingüístic coneguda també com la Catalunya del Nord, és prou fràgil. La variant dialectal que s’hi parla ha estat sacsejada per una història contemporània nefasta per al seu desenvolupament en el marc politicoadministratiu francès. Hi trobem ara un model en fase de transició, parlat per sectors de població aïllats en el temps, l’espai i la societat, un model en el qual coexisteixen la part íntima de la llengua multisecular i una revernacularització incipient basada en l’estàndard. Tot això passa avui en un context de voluntat de recuperació de la identitat, del fet de sentir-se català, però d’una manera un xic diferent de la resta de catalanoparlants. Aquest petit llibre pretén fer una síntesi de l’evolució mil·lenària de la llengua en un context particular i proposa un repàs de la variació, tal com es coneix avui, per als qui encara volen mantenir i transmetre els mots i els sons de casa en la seua llengua escrita o oral. Desde un punto de vista cuantitativo, los estudios culturales ocupan sin duda un espacio menor. Sin embargo, los tres artículos aquí presentados dan cuenta de la variedad de perspectivas posibles dentro de este apartado. No solo abarcan estos estudios diferentes géneros literarios, sino que recorren diferentes épocas históricas, desde el renacimiento hasta nuestros días. Así, destaca la recepción de la obra de Shakespeare adaptada a los principios estéticos del siglo XVIII español, la aparición de un problema tan actual como la violencia doméstica en el teatro y el cine de mediados del siglo XX o la vinculación de posicionamientos contraculturales de la generación Beat en la música de Bod Dylan. Todos estos estudios exploran, pues, la relación entre las prácticas culturales, la vida diaria y los contextos históricos en los que se producen. Como suele ser habitual, gran parte de las contribuciones presentadas en este volumen se centran en el estudio del aprendizaje del inglés como segunda lengua, una de las principales preocupaciones del sistema educativo español en estos momentos, tanto en la etapa preuniversitaria como universitaria. Es lógico, por tanto, que estos jóvenes investigadores muestren interés por un asunto que atañe a un elevado número de estudiantes en la sociedad actual. Los estudios van desde el análisis de libros de texto utilizados en la enseñanza del inglés, para comprobar si estos textos adoptan correctamente las cuatro destrezas básicas (listening, speaking, speaking, writing) al aprendizaje de la lengua desde el punto de vista de una aproximación comunicativa, hasta la relación de la prosodia y la utilización de audífonos por parte de personas sordas o la percepción que tienen los estudiantes de la pronunciación del inglés. Como se ve, problemas muy cercanos a la realidad pedagógica. Las contribuciones literarias se centran exclusivamente en autores del siglo XX (incluida una adaptación al Londres actual de una obra de Shakespeare), pero recorren todos los géneros literarios, así como el cine. En general, estos estudios se fijan en obras concretas y las analizan desde perspectivas culturales, sociológicas o psicológicas. Podemos encontrar autores consagrados, como Theodore Roethke y Ted Hughes o escritoras más localistas, como la canadiense Jeannette Armstrong, y sobresalen miradas postmodernistas, tanto en el ámbito de la novela como del cine. En definitiva, se trata de una selección de artículos altamente prometedora, que supone un claro desafío al futuro de los Estudios Ingleses. Por todo ello, hay que felicitar a todos los participantes y, sobre todo, a los editores de este volumen, que han demostrado una enorme capacidad de trabajo y entusiasmo.

La situation de la langue catalane dans le « nord de la Catalogne », à savoir la zone septentrionale de l’aire linguistique également connue sous le nom de Catalogne du Nord, est somme toute fragile. L’ancienneté du dialecte que l’on y parle a été fortement secouée par une histoire contemporaine néfaste pour son développement au sein du cadre politico-administratif français. On y trouve maintenant un dialecte en transition, parlé par des secteurs de la population isolés dans le temps, l’espace et la société, un modèle dans lequel coexistent le côté intime de la langue multiséculaire et une « revernacularisation » naissante basée sur le standard. Tout ceci se produit aujourd’hui dans un contexte de volonté de reconquête de l’identité, du fait de se sentir catalan, mais d’une manière différente des autres catalanophones. Ce petit livre a pour but de faire une synthèse de l’évolution millénaire de la langue dans un contexte particulier et propose un examen du changement que connait le dialecte tel qu’il est connu aujourd’hui, pour ceux qui veulent encore maintenir et transmettre les mots et les sons « d’ici » dans leur langue écrite ou parlée. Il s’agit aussi de faire comprendre aux Catalans du Nord que leur langue catalane est correcte, tout en corrigeant les erreurs d’orthographe et les barbarismes inutiles
