Protect yourself in the mean streets, with just an umbrella! (or quarter staff) Originally published in 1890, this vintage classic of English self defense literature focuses on the history, techniques, and practice methods of combat with quarter staff, broad sword, bayonet, and stick fighting. The later encompasses similarity of usage with other everyday objects that may be at hand such as walking stick, cudgel, shillelagh or even the common umbrella. The book delves into the unique manipulation skills/movements for each different weapon, and notes their similarities too; covering not only basics, and their real-world applications, but also how to outfit yourself to safely practice these skills with an actual training opponent for maximum effectiveness. This book is interesting look at defensive arts training from the English Victorian age and for those interested in learning about these relatively obscure martial arts practices that go beyond fencing and far into the realm of hand-held ordinary objects turned to good use.

Get Tough! is the famous WW2 training manual of lethal unarmed combat techniques as taught to British Commandos, OSS/SOE agents by Major W.E. Bare hands/knife/clubs/improvised weapons, and prisoner control are all shown in a clear and classically illustrated manner. This eye-opening book is the 'Grandad' of all modern military special forces hand-to-hand systems. And...the second book, Combato: The Art of Self Defense (1942), by Bill Underwood, is another World War 2 defensive system manual. The Hidden Classic of mid-20th Century Defensive Tactics Originally published in 1951, this little known defensive classic is 'the manual' of Wesley Brown's Defensive Combat system as taught to Naval Aviators during World War 2. After a chance encounter at the Chicago World's Fair, he is recruited as a plain clothes officer to a Chicago police department by Col. Isham Randolph (of the crime-fighting Chicago Secret Six). Wesley rose quickly to become the asst. Director of the police training Traffic Institute at Northwestern University. Here he honed his concepts for defensive tactics suitable for police close quarters encounters with the criminal element. With the outbreak of WW2, he joined the Navy and was assigned to create a new hand-to-hand combat program for the Naval Air Corps. The program was so well received that both the Army, and fledgling O.S.S. patterned their courses after it. This course and the techniques in it are immortalized in the U.S. Navy film, "Hand to Hand Combat in Three Parts" which was both produced and stars Wesley Brown, showing his style of rough-and-tumble moves/counter-moves. An amazing and comprehensive look into early 1930's–40's defensive techniques. It deserves a place on any serious martial arts bookshelf. Topics covered include: - Unarmed Opponents - Armed opponents (Pistol/rifle/knife) - Police club use - Wrist Locks and escapes - Grapples, Chokes / escapes - Vulnerable Areas - Hand Blows - Kicks - Throws / Leg sweeps - Defensive moves for Ladies - Control holds, etc. - Training regimens Keywords: wrestling, rough and tumble, knife, baton, club, choke hold, police, OSS

The Infamous 'How to Steal a MIG' manual This fascinating Air Force technical report is specifically focused on how a pilot, behind the Iron curtain or enemy lines, could know just enough to start up and fly home a stolen MIG-15 fighter. Finally declassified in 1988, and only released to the public in 2015 via a FOIA request by Governmentattic.org, this unique look at Cold War Air Force intelligence product is a must-read for student’s of Soviet era aviation. Informally as the "How to Steal a MIG" manual, it was interestingly, published by the Air Technical Intelligence Center at Wright-Patterson AFB in 1955, a mere two years after the U.S. obtained a functioning Mig-15 from N. Korean defector No Kum-Sok who defected to Kimpo Air Base on 21 September 1953. His MiG-15 was minutely inspected and was test flown by several test pilots, including Chuck Yeager. It is now in the collection of the National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton, Ohio. “This manual has been prepared specifically for the purpose of providing USAF personnel with operating information on the MiG-15.” “Only the information the pilot must know is presented,” “Some procedures which might be considered unorthodox for operational flying of this airplane are recommended because they represent the simplest means of assuring safe flight.”

Routledge Handbook Of Medieval Military Strategy written by John D. Hosler and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-13 with History categories.

This Handbook provides the first comprehensive and global analysis of medieval military strategy, covering the period from the sixth to the seventeenth century. Challenging the widely held notion in modern strategic studies that medieval strategy was non-existent, the Handbook brings together leading scholars to explore a range of literatures, campaigns, laws, and contexts that highlight medieval warfare’s multifaceted contours. The scope of the work is ambitious, with over 30 chapters dedicated to analyzing strategy across six continents. From Charlemagne to Henry V and Scandinavia to Florence; southbound to Morocco then across the Sahara to Kongo; past the Adriatic to Byzantium and Georgia and the Crusades and Egypt; further still into Indian and Chinese dynasties and Japan; and finally, to Central and South America—this Handbook provides ready access to military strategy across the medieval world stage. In the process, it fills a significant gap in the history of strategy and serves to connect the ancient world with the modern, demonstrating that—whatever the period—military leaders have consistently plied warfare in the pursuit of greater ends. This Handbook will be of much interest to researchers and students of military strategy, medieval military history, and strategic studies in general.

Americans have long been fascinated by the Civil War and its biggest battles, particularly Gettysburg, Antietam, and Shiloh, all of which involved Robert E. Lee or Ulysses S. Grant. But one of the 6 biggest battles of the war, and the one that took the heaviest toll by % on both armies was fought at the end of 1862 in Tennessee, and it involved neither of those generals. In late December 1862, William Rosecrans’s Union Army of the Cumberland was contesting Middle Tennessee against Braxton Bragg’s Army of Tennessee, and for three days the two armies savaged each other as Bragg threw his army at Rosecrans in a series of desperate assaults. Bragg’s army was unable to dislodge the Union army, and he eventually withdrew his army after learning that Rosecrans was on the verge of receiving reinforcements. Though the battle was stalemated, the fact that the Union army was left in possession of the field allowed Rosecrans to declare victory and embarrassed Bragg. Of all the Civil War battles fought, and of all the victories achieved by Robert E. Lee at the command of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, the Battle of Chancellorsville is considered the most tactically complex and ultimately the most brilliant Confederate victory of the war. In early May 1863, the Army of the Potomac was at the height of its power as it bore down on Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia near Fredericksburg, where the Confederates had defeated them the previous December. The Union behemoth had spent most of the winter season being reorganized and drilled by “Fighting Joe” Hooker, an aggressive commander who had fought hard at places like Antietam. With an army nearing 130,000 men, Hooker’s Army of the Potomac was twice the size of the Army of Northern Virginia. Lee’s heavily outnumbered army won the most stunning victory of the war at Chancellorsville, but it cost them Stonewall Jackson. Moreover, the reorganization of the armies and the battle itself played an influential role in the way the Pennsylvania Campaign and the Battle of Gettysburg unfolded later that summer. Without question, the most famous battle of the American Civil War took place outside of the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, which happened to be a transportation hub, serving as the center of a wheel with several roads leading out to other Pennsylvanian towns. From July 1-3, Robert E. Lee’s Confederate Army of Northern Virginia tried everything in its power to decisively defeat George Meade’s Union Army of the Potomac, unleashing ferocious assaults that inflicted nearly 50,000 casualties in all. Day 1 of the battle would have been one of the 25 biggest battles of the Civil War itself, and it ended with a tactical Confederate victory. But over the next two days, Lee would try and fail to dislodge the Union army with attacks on both of its flanks during the second day and Pickett’s Charge on the third and final day. Meade’s stout defense held, barely, repulsing each attempted assault, handing the Union a desperately needed victory that ended up being one of the Civil War’s turning points. After the South had lost the war, the importance of Gettysburg as one of the “high tide” marks of the Confederacy became apparent to everyone, making the battle all the more important in the years after it had been fought. While former Confederate generals cast about for scapegoats, with various officers pointing fingers at Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet, and James Stuart, historians and avid Civil War fans became obsessed with studying and analyzing all the command decisions and army movements during the entire campaign. Despite the saturation of coverage, Americans refuse to grow tired of visiting the battlefield and reliving the biggest battle fought in North America.
