What is a phrasal verb? A phrasal verb is when you take a verb and add a preposition, but the new combination doesn't mean what either the original verb or preposition mean. So when someone says, "We will bring up that topic at the meeting," it doesn't mean someone is going to carry something upstairs! Instead, the phrasal verb "bring up" means to discuss something. Every language has phrasal verbs, and English has more than 500 related to business topics, so it's very confusing for a person learning English to hear familiar words that suddenly have different meanings when a preposition is added to them. Indeed, mastering phrasal verbs is one of the final steps in fluency, yet they are usually learned only by hearing or reading them and then guessing their meanings through context. The goal of this book is to speed that process along. From the author of "500+ Business English Idioms."

One of the more difficult things about working with native English speakers is their use of expressions, or idioms. What's a "dog and pony show"? What does it mean to "leave someone in the lurch" or to "take a beating"? Unfortunately, you can't stop English speakers from using these idioms, so you need to understand them yourself! Each of the more than 500 idioms in this book is presented, in alphabetical order, with its meaning and a business example. Recommended for intermediate to advanced English speakers. The author, Brad Carty, has taught business English for over 20 years to students around the world, and has a Masters Degree in Teaching English as a Second/Other Language. He is also the author of 500+ Business English Phrasal Verbs.

The present thesis deals with the use of phrasal verbs in business English, their meaning as well as their role in the business language. The analysis is based on the course books for business English classes Market Leader. Pre-Intermediate Business English Course Book and Market Leader. Intermediate Business English Course Book. Not until the pre-intermediate level do the learners of English get acquanted with the phenomenon called the phrasal verb, the combination made up of a lexical or single-word verb and an adverbial particle. The main aim of the thesis is to analyse the phrasal verb combinations that cause the most problems to Slovenian learners of English. Those are semi-transparent or semi-idiomatic and non-transparent or highly idiomatic phrasal verbs. The meaning of such verbs cannot be deducted from the meaning of their constituents and because of that they are difficult to understand and/or use. It is even more difficult if such verbal phrases occur in the field of business language, which is special due to its specific phrases. The structure of phrasal verbs and the characteristics of the business language are described in the theoretical part. The empirical part introduces the sources which were used for the analysis. Next is the compiled list of phrasal verbs in alphabetical order, followed by the analysis of the most frequent single-word verbs and the most frequent adverbial particles. A detailed analysis of the idiomatic phrasal verbs rounds off the empirical part.

This book aims to provide English second language (L2) learners withthe necessary speaking and writing tools in the use of the most frequentbusiness English lexicon. Although it has been written for first language(L1) speakers of Spanish, its use can also be extrapolated to any L2 Englishlearner, regardless of their L1.The present book includes the 100 most common phrasal verbs that anyEnglish speaker needs to be engaged in any oral or written business setting.Phrasal verbs always pose a challenge to L2 English speakers. The merge ofa verb and one or even two particles makes these constituents form a singlelexical and syntactic unit that di ers from the syntax and the semantics ofeach of the constituents individually (e.g. Liao and Fukuya 2002; McCarthyand O'Dell 2004; Trebits 2009; among others). To set an example, the verb"back" and the particle "off " refer to the decision of stopping puttingpressure on someone.

This complete guide to over 850 Phrasal Verbs used in daily life by native speakers, also includes a section with over 200 business idioms and phrasal verbs. Exercises are included to test your knowledge on the most commonly used phrasal verbs. Cross that bridge and start mastering the language today. About phrasal verbs Phrasal verbs, or multi - word verbs as they are often referred to, can be rather daunting for non natives of the English language. A mistake in using the wrong particle or the wrong word order can completely change the intended meaning. This can lead to misunderstandings which can either be horrific or hilarious. Students of the English language are not expected to be able to remember all the phrasal verbs - they are too numerous - but they should be familiar with the most common ones and they should also be able to recognise their meanings in context. Phrasal verbs play an important role in the English language. There is no getting away from them. Every time natives speak they use them. Take a look at the ones below. Did you know that the following two sentences have different meanings? Peter hung up after a few minutes = he ended the telephone call. Peter hung up on me after a few minutes = he ended the call by interrupting the conversation abruptly, angrily and rudely. How about this one? I saw through him and I saw him through. Both have different meanings. I saw through him = I understood his deception/the mask he wore, whereas I saw him through = I gave him my support during a difficult period of his life. Now look at these two examples: Pretty flabbergasting! I've gone off cheese = I no longer like cheese. The cheese has gone off = the cheese is not fresh anymore. It is not good to eat. If you eat it you could become sick. The alarm clock has just gone off = Can you turn it off please? I want to sleep for another few minutes. Does this mean that the alarm clock is not fresh anymore? NOOOO!!!!! Does it mean the alarm clock doesn't like someone or something anymore? NOOO!!! Well what does it mean you may be asking yourself. You should be able to understand from the context. Out of context 'to go off' is devoid of any meaning whatsoever. In the case of the alarm clock, it means, it rang. Another example is: He turned on me = he either attacked me physically or verbally. He turned me on = he caused me to become excited. Now can you see why the wrong use can lead to numerous misunderstandings? Phrasal verbs can be separable, that is, as seen in the example 'he turned me on', and inseparable as in the example 'he turned on me'. There are also phrasal verbs which are both separable and inseparable Example: She took off her jacket/she took her jacket off = she removed her jacket. In this book you will learn and become familiar with each phrasal verb type. Good clear examples are set out to illustrate the meanings. ABOUT THE AUTHOR The author has been a teacher of English as a foreign language for over 18 years. Born in the North East of Scotland, she has spent most of her adult life abroad, teaching students of various nationalities how to speak English effectively.
