The Normandy landings of 6 June 1944, across five sectors of the French coast - Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword - constituted the largest amphibious invasion in history. This study analyses in depth the preparations and implementation of the D-Day landing on Gold Beach by XXX Corps. Historians have tended to dismiss the landing on Gold Beach as straightforward but the evidence points to a different reality. Armour supported the infantry landing and prior bombing was intended to weaken German defences; however, the bulk of the bombing landed too far inland, and many craft foundered in difficult conditions at sea. It was the tenacity of the assault units and the flexibility of the follow up units which enabled the Gold landing to secure the right flank of the British Army in Normandy. Using detailed primary evidence from The National Archives and the Imperial War Museum, this volume provides a substantial assessment of the background to the landing on Gold, and analyses the events of D-Day in the wider context of the Normandy Campaign.

The 2nd Battalion of the Essex Regiment, originally part of the 25th Infantry Brigade, was then attached to the 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division and served with the BEF in France in 1940. The battalion was successfully evacuated from Dunkirk. Back in Britain, the battalion became part of the 56th Independent Infantry Brigade, training intensively for the eventual D-day invasion. The battalion landed on Gold Beach in Normandy and quickly moved inland. Involved in the taking of Le Havre, members of the battalion discovered the payroll of the German city garrison in the town's hospital basement. They fought in the battle for the shattered and fiercely contested city of Caen, serving again with the 50th Division and briefly the 59th Division. The battalion then joined the 49th Division for the remainder of the war, serving chiefly with the First Canadian Army, and taking part in the Second Battle of Arnhem. This excellent history is profusely illustrated with battle photographs and contains a Roll of Honour.

Allied activity started around midnight 5/6 June when pathfinders landed in the Normandy area to guide in paratroopers. The British 6th Airborne Div. Canadian 1st (Independent) Parachute Div and the U.S. 82nd and 101st Parachute Divisions descended behind the coast line to seize vital objectives and disrupt German attempts to reinforce the beaches. The British were tasked with two important objectives: seizing the bridges over the Orne canal and the River Orne, the operation carried out by the Ox and Bucks, and destroying the Merville battery close to Ouistreham and capable of shelling Sword beach with heavy caliber artillery. This task fell to 9th Para Battalion. Despite the paratroopers often been scattered and landing in areas some distance away from their intended Landing Zones, the airborne forces performed admirably throughout the night. At dawn seaborne troops were scheduled to make landings at five beach. From east to west these were codenamed Sword (British 3rd Infantry Div supported by the 27th Armored Brigade and the 1st and 4th Special Service Brigades), Juno (3rd Canadian Infantry Div supported by the 2nd Canadian Armored Brig and No. 48 Royal Marine Commando), Gold (British 50th Infantry Div supported by the British 8th Armored Brig, British 56th Infantry Brig and No. 47 Royal Marine Commando), Omaha (U.S. V Corps comprised of the 1st Infantry Div, the 29th Infantry Div and the U.S Army Rangers) and Utah (U.S. VII Corps comprised of the 4th Infantry Div, the 90th Infantry Div and the 4th Cavalry Regiment). Sword beach was closest to Caen and what would later be named Pegasus Bridge and it was from here that Lord Lovat was to lead his commandos to establish the first link up with the Ox and Bucks from the sea. Omaha beach saw the heaviest fighting with perhaps some 2,000 casualties. The U.S Army Rangers 2nd Batt was tasked with a particularly dangerous mission: scaling 90 foot cliffs at Pointe du Hoc while under enemy fire to destroy 155mm guns (which, as it turned out, had been moved from the area). Before the troops landed a massive air and naval bombardment was carried out. The air bombardment for the most part was a failure, but the naval bombardment, which was far more accurate, met with some success and smaller vessels were able to continue to provide support fire throughout the struggle for the beaches. By the end of the day all the beaches were secure and the Allies had advanced inland; not as far as intended or planned, but nevertheless a foot hold in western Europe had been established and more men and materiel would arrive through Normandy in the coming days and weeks allowing the Battle of Normandy to be successfully fought and won.

This WWII military study examines the combat experiences of three Allied divisions charged with spearheading the invasion of Normandy. To lead the charge into France after the Normandy landings, General Montgomery brought three veteran desert formations back from the Mediterranean. They were the 50th Infantry and 7th Armored divisions, plus 4th Armored Brigade. Their task beyond the beaches was to push south to Villers Bocage with armor on the evening of D-Day in order to disrupt German counter-attacks on the beachhead. Difficulties on 50th Division’s beaches allowed time for German reinforcements to arrive in Normandy. As a result, 4th Armored Brigade was firmly blocked just south of Point 103 after an advance of less than five miles. A major counter-attack by Panzer Lehr failed, as did a renewed British attempt, this time by the vaunted 7th Armored Division, which was halted at Tilly sur Seulles. From here the fighting became a progressively attritional struggle in the hedgerows of the Bocage country south of Bayeux. More units were drawn into the fighting, which steadily extended west. Finally, an opportunity to outflank the German defenses via the Caumont Gap allowed 7th Armored Division to reach Villers Bocage. There then followed what the battalions of 50th Division describe as their ‘most unpleasant period of the war’, in bitter fighting, at often very close quarters, for the ‘next hedgerow’.

When the amphibious Duplex Drive (DD) Sherman tanks of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars (QMO) touched down on the sand of Sword Beach as the vanguard of the D-Day invasion, ahead of the infantry and Commandos, it was the culmination of an evolution spanning several years. Switching roles from a mounted regiment in India, into a mechanised, armored cavalry regiment, they fought in France in 1940, then faced an uncertain future, after evacuating through Dunkirk. In the narrative of D-Day the Canadians figure chiefly—if at all—as an ineffective force bungling their part in the early phase of Operation Overlord. The reality is quite another story. As both the Allies and the Germans knew, only Germany’s Panzers could crush Overlord in its tracks. The Canadians’ job was to stop the Panzers—which, as this book finally makes clear, is precisely what they did. Rescuing from obscurity one of the least understood and most important chapters in the history of D-Day, Stopping the Panzers is the first full account of how the Allies planned for and met the Panzer threat to Operation Overlord. As such, this book marks nothing less than a paradigm shift in our understanding of the Normandy campaign. Beginning with the Allied planning for Operation Overlord in 1943, historian Marc Milner tracks changing and expanding assessments of the Panzer threat, and the preparations of the men and units tasked with handling that threat.
