Sweden, Denmark & Norway, 'those northern lands where the prevailing tone of life is grey', have not been traditionally associated with the delicate art of the short story. This volume gives readers a taste of the richness & power of some of the greatest Scandinavian writers. From Fredrika Bremer, once described as the 'Swedish Jane Austen', comes a tale of downtrodden humanity; from Bjornstjerne Bjornson, one of Norway's finest writers, the stark anguish contained in 'The Father'; & from Denmark's Hans Christian Andersen, the warmth & delight to be found in his world-famous children's stories.

Except the horses, and a few hens which had strayed into the field, there was not a living creature to be seen on the whole plain.... They dragged themselves out of barns, sheds and rooms, went sleepily to the horses and rakes, dispersed over the fields, and in a few minutes all was life and bustle once more. "The grandfather, alone, went from one house to another and at last up on the highest barn-bridge to look out. A little boy came running toward him, he had probably called him."' In "Arne" (Chapter X) we find a vivid description of the home life on Baard Bcentsen's farmri "Arne put down his saw, and went into the kitchen. There was white sand on the floor and chopped juniper twigs strewn over it; along the walls shone brightly-polished copper kettles, and in the racks were rows of china. Dinner was being cooked. Arne asked if he might speak with Baard. "Go into the livingroom," someone said, pointing. There was no latch to the door, but a handle of brass instead. It was clean and well-painted within, the ceiling decorated with many roses; the cupboards were painted red, with their owner's name in black letters, the wall bed likewise, but with blue stripes round the edges. Beyond, at the end of the long table, sat a woman w
