Históricamente, han sido elegidas las 7 Maravillas, aquellos lugares espectaculares que definen, identifican y representan a los pueblos de la mejor manera. Hace más de dos mil años, se escogieron las 7 Maravillas del Mundo Antiguo (de las que solo queda la pirámide de Giza en Egipto) y en el 2007, las 7 del Mundo Moderno (el Coliseo Romano, la Gran Muralla China y Machu Picchu, entre otras). Ese mismo año, fueron seleccionadas, en concurso público, las 7 Maravillas de Colombia (entre ellas, la Catedral de Sal de Zipaquirá, la arquitectura militar de Cartagena de Indias y Ciudad Perdida). La capital también quiso resaltar las suyas y eligió, de manera democrática, las 7 Maravillas de Bogotá. En octubre de 2019, la Academia de Historia de Bogotá hizo una invitación para que, desde la Alcaldía, promoviéramos este emocionante concurso para destacar la riqueza cultural de la ciudad, el cual desarrollamos desde el Instituto Distrital de Patrimonio Cultural, IDPC. Entonces se conformó un grupo de expertos, integrado por el doctor Jorge Fernández Duque, secretario académico de la Academia de Historia de Bogotá, y los reconocidos profesores Alberto Saldarriaga, Carlos Niño y Lorenzo Fonseca, quienes pro-pusieron un listado de veintiún sitios altamente representativos para los habitantes de la ciudad, definidos como conjuntos urbanos y paisajísticos (no espacios o edificaciones individuales); estos fueron puestos en conocimiento de la ciudadanía para ser elegidas las 7 Maravillas por parte de los mismos bogotanos, a través de internet. La acogida de la convocatoria fue muy positiva y, luego de tan solo diez días, se obtuvieron más de 10.700 votos, por medio de los que cada participante seleccionó los 7 lugares patrimoniales que más quería, tanto naturales como construidos. De este modo, fueron escogidas las 7 Maravillas de Bogotá: los cerros tutelares de Monserrate y Guadalupe con el boquerón del río San Francisco; el parque Simón Bolívar y la Biblioteca Virgilio Barco; el Jardín Botánico y la Unidad Deportiva El Salitre; la plaza de Bolívar y las edificaciones que la conforman; el parque de la Independencia, la plaza de toros La Santamaría y las Torres del Parque; el Museo Nacional y el Parque Central Bavaria, y la Avenida Jiménez junto con el Eje Ambiental. Muy cerca, quedaron la Ciudad Universitaria, la Manzana Cultural del Banco de la República y, un poco más distanciados, la planta de tratamiento de Vitelma, el Santuario del Divino Niño en el barrio 20 de Julio, TransMiCable en Ciudad Bolívar, el parque de Los Mártires, la basílica del Voto Nacional y el barrio La Merced, entre otros conjuntos sugeridos.
