Die Umbrüche des 20. Jahrhunderts forderten die Göttinger Akademie heraus. Die Grenzen des verbindenden wissenschaftlichen Ethos traten dabei klar hervor. Als eine der ältesten deutschen Akademien musste sich die Göttinger Gelehrtengesellschaft seit Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts nicht nur einer sich neu formierenden Forschungslandschaft stellen. Zwischen Erstem Weltkrieg und bundesrepublikanischer Nachkriegsgesellschaft änderten sich auch die politischen Rahmbedingungen. Désirée Schauz geht der Frage nach, wie sich die Akademie und ihre Mitglieder angesichts dieser Umbrüche positionierten. Inmitten alter und neuer Wissenschaftsorganisationen war das Göttinger Netzwerk zugleich von Konkurrenz und Kooperation geprägt. Das galt sowohl für das Verhältnis der eigenen Klassen untereinander und die Zusammenschlüsse mit den anderen deutschen Akademien als auch für die Außenbeziehungen auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene. Das universelle wissenschaftliche Ethos erwies sich dabei bereits lange vor dem Nationalsozialismus als brüchig. Nach dem, wenn auch vergleichsweise späten Ausschluss ihrer jüdischen Mitglieder tat sich die Akademie nach 1945 schwer, die alten Kontakte wieder aufzubauen. Neben der institutionellen Selbstbehauptung zeigt der exemplarische Blick auf einzelne Forscher aber auch individuelle Handlungsspielräume der Göttinger akademischen Elite auf.

This biography gives an insider view of 20th century German science in the making. The discovery by Max von Laue in 1912 of interference effects demonstrated the wave-like nature of X-rays and the atomic lattice structure of crystals. This major advance for research on solids earned him the Nobel Prize two years later, the ultimate acclaim as an exceptional theoretician. As an early supporter of Einstein’s relativity theory, he published fundamental papers on light scattering as well as on matter waves and superconductivity. Laue may be counted among the few persons of influence in Germany who – as Einstein put it – managed to “stay morally upright” under Nazism. My book Metamorphic Rocks and Metamorphic Belts (in Japanese) was published by Iwanami Shoten, Publishers, in Tokyo in 1965. A few years later, Mr D. Lynch-Blosse of George Allen & Unwin Ltd contacted me to explore the possibility of translating it into English. Thus, translation accompanied by rewriting of substantial parts of the book was made in subsequent years, resulting in the present book Metamorphism and Metamorphic Belts. This title was chosen to emphasize the tectonic Significance of metamorphic belts. Metamorphic geology has a long history. The microscopic description and classification of metamorphic rocks began in the late nineteenth century. The theory of equilibrium mineral assemblages began in the first half of the twentieth century. Detailed mineralogical studies and the experimental determination of the pressure-temperature conditions of metamorphism began in the 1950s. The importance of metamorphic petrology in our understanding of the tectonic processes has been realized only in the past decade. This book is intended to synthesize the mineralogic, petrologic" and tectonic aspects of metamorphism. Advanced treatment of the thermodynamic and structural aspects is not intended.
